Primary Question: Was the Black Power Movement a rejection of the goals and tactics of the civil rights movement?
Some of argued that the black power movement was a dramatic shift in goals and tactics from the civil movement after World War II represented by Martin Luther King, Jr. I’ve provided three documents, two from the “March on Washington” and one from the Black Panther Party. Set 1: The March documents are the “Lincoln Memorial Program” and the text from Martin Luther King Jr.’s “I Have a Dream” speech. Set 2: The Black Panther Party document is the original October 1966 Party Platform, also known as the “Ten-Point Program.” I’ve also included an easier to read version of the pamphlet.
Please read carefully the “March on Washington” sources and the Black Panther Party Platform and Program to answer the essay topic. Compare and contrast the two sets of documents and also consider the following:
Compare and contrast the problems each set of documents emphasize as most significant? How are they similar and/or different from one another?
What evidence to you find in each set of documents regarding tactics to bring about change? Consider not only the text of the speech and pamphlet, but the images and list of participants on the “March on Washington” program.
The essay MUST be an analysis of the two sets of primary sources. Please do not “pad” the essay with long quotations. Instead, use short quotations (preferably no more than 4-5 words) when using direct textual evidence. You do not need any additional research.
