Instructor: Dr. Graeme Abernethy;

For your research project, you must complete a research-based, persuasive term paper on one of the topics below. In order to complete the research paper, you must gather, analyze and synthesize academic research material. Combine your own thinking with that of others, and compose a focused, persuasive, well-developed argument with a clear thesis statement and backed up by appropriate evidence. Make sure to consult key parts of the textbook and refer to sample essays.

Parts of the Research Project

  1. Outline for Research Essay – November 19th, worth 5%
  • Outline for the entire paper (approximately 5-6 PowerPoint slides)
  • Make reference to at least 2 academic sources
  • Must include thesis statement
  • Separate Instructions in Canvas

  1. Final Draft of Research Paper – December 3rd; worth 25%
  • Completed draft of paper – 1200-1400 words, with reference to at least 5 academic sources
  • Submitted electronically through Canvas. The student must be named as the author of the document.
  • Annotated Works Cited of all academic sources
  • Citation method: MLA
  • WLC/WriteAway appointment is strongly recommended

  • You must use at least 5 academic sources to support your argument. An academic or scholarly source includes a book; book chapter; article in academic journal (printed or digital version); or other academic work.
  • Reliable websites/online resources, or other sources such as films, may be consulted in addition to the scholarly sources, but NOT instead of scholarly sources. Analyses that cite only websites or non-academic sources will result in an automatic fail.
  • All sources must be cited accurately and appropriately, according to the MLA citation method.

  1. Art is the most important aspect of culture.
  2. Advertising is unhealthy for society.
  3. A world without borders would be a better world.

Since these topics are quite broad, part of the challenge of the research project is to narrow down the topic so that your thesis is focused and your discussion can be completed within the given word limit.

  • You must not recycle an essay that you had previously written for another course.
  • Remember that writing means re-writing, so make sure you revise and edit your analysis several times to check for errors and sharpen the development of your argument. You are encouraged to take a draft to the Writing and Learning Centre, and ask a tutor for advice and editorial assistance. To make an appointment, go to the College website, and click on the link to the Writing and Learning Centre. Please make sure you bring this assignment handout with you.
  • Please remember that you are expected to uphold the standards of academic integrity and avoid participation in any acts of academic misconduct, such as plagiarism (which includes submitting work that was completed by another person). Failure to acknowledge sources properly will result in disciplinary measures. Please refer to the course syllabus for further details.

Grading Criteria

You will be graded on your ability to –
