I have a little “homework” for you to do.
Huckleberry Finn can be considered an historical novel, in that while it was published in 1885 it takes place in America before the start of the Civil War (1860); that is, before the end to slavery. I have two landmark Supreme Court cases I’d like you to look up, which are:
1. Dredd Scott v. Sandford
2. Plessy v. Ferguson
Please describe how the Dredd Scott case is related to Huckleberry Finn. Second, please describe how Plessy was related to race relations when the ruling was delivered, and, in your opinion, is/ isn’t related to race relations in the US now.
As you’ll see from the enclosed attachment, after providing a snapshot of the publication history of the book I also included some reviews and one argument that the book should not be taught in schools. You should be far enough along in the reading (darn it, you better be!!) to offer a glimpse into your own assessment/ review of the book (3-5 sentences, or more, if you like), along with some stirrings of opinion of whether or not the book should be censored in a public school. You’re welcome to consider if there’s an ‘age appropriate’ aspect to it. Or not. In other words, not necessarily based on its literary quality but its political/ social/ cultural implications it should/ shouldn’t be read at the college level (3-5 sentences, or more).
There you have it: You’re responding to the two Supreme Court questions and the two questions after it. Please Respond here, as an email, rather than in blackboard. You can include a separate attachment or supply it within the email itself. Whatever works best for you. Let’s say you need to submit it by Saturday. That seems fair, and it’ll give some of you losers…Oh, I mean deadbeats….Gosh, darn, so sorry….crumb bums….oh, what’s the matter with me….who haven’t been keeping up with the reading to get cracking
