  1. Write a short paragraph, with a THESIS, explaining how you are defining the theme your are exploring in your analysis of your 5 works of art. Why is the theme relevant to our understanding of art work from multiple cultures and multiple time periods.

 

  1. Include a color image of each work of art with a full citation: Title, date, time period, material, location.
  2. For each work of art explain how the theme relates to, and reflects, the stylistic, iconographic, and/or cultural context of the work.
  3. Explain how each monument relates to, or differentiates from, 1 of the other works in your timeline.

 

  1. Write a concluding paragraph about your analysis of the theme you choose, elaborating on the range, consistency, continuity, or legacy of your topic.

 

  1. Include a Chicago Style Bibliography of your sources.
  2. You should use Gardner, Barron, and SmartHistory, but you may also use other outside sources. Wikipedia is acceptable if you cite it.
  3. You do not need to use footnotes unless you are using someone else’s analysis and ideas.

 

Grading:

Your work will be graded according to the following:

  1. The extent to which you incorporate art historical thinking skills into your analysis (see Barrons, p. 13): Visual Analysis, Contextual Analysis, Comparison of Works of Art, Artistic Traditions, Art Historical Interpretations, Argumentation.
  2. The clarity of your writing, editing, wording, and use of appropriate terminology and specialized terms.
  3. Higher grades will be given for more sophisticated and analytical examinations of the works of art, particularly where clear differentiation and formal or cultural continuity are addressed.
