Goals:

To summarize the main points of the academic literature on your final paper topic;
To identify strengths and weaknesses of current research on your topic;
To identify gaps, aspects or perspectives of the problem that have been neglected or omitted in the academic literature.

IMPORTANT:

DO NOT merely summarize one article after the other.

Your literature review must have one or more argumentative threads.

Compare and contrast the three academic articles on the basis of their research questions, methods, main results, theories, and discussions.

Step 1: Organizing content before writing the literature review

Download the ‘Blank Literature Review Grid (Excel file) available on Moodle;
Use the information from your fact sheets to fill the Excel grid.
I did a grid based on my own research on mass murder. You can check this file on Moodle to get ideas on how to fill your own literature review grid.

Step 2: Writing up the literature review

Write a four (4)-page paper, double-spaced, comparing and contrasting the three articles you collected. Use the information entered in your Excel grid to write the review.

Basic rules for academic writing:

Writing for an academic audience is not the same as communicating informally with relatives or friends. Your writing style must reflect professionalism and attention to details:

Remain objective/neutral in your writing. Leave emotions and preconceived ideas out of the writing process;
Define key concepts (remember not every reader is familiar with your topic);
Provide examples and evidence to back up your arguments;
Eliminate unnecessary words, especially adjectives or adverbs, that might distract the reader;
Do not use slang words or contractions;
Avoid writing in the first person (e.g. ‘I’, ‘Me’);
Avoid referring to the reader as ‘you’ (e.g. ‘As you can see’, ‘you need to understand…’, etc.)
Pay attention to spelling and grammar;
Avoid using special fonts and colors;
Edit and proof-read your paper before turning it in.

Citing your sources:

Use in-text citations in APA or ASA format;
Include full bibliography (APA or ASA format) at the end of your literature review.

SUBMIT by the deadline:

Your own literature review grid in Excel (Template is available on Moodle);
Your paper:
Basically, transform the content of the literature grid into a paper with full sentences and sections:
Introduction of paper:
What is the topic?
Why is it important to conduct research on this topic?
General outline of your paper
Definitions:
Compare and contrast the topic definitions across the articles. For example, how did the authors define police brutality, child abuse, racial discrimination in the workplace, etc.? Which definition(s) would you retain? Why? Any definitions you feel should not be used in research? Why?
Research methods of the articles
Design
Sampling techniques, size, characteristics
Strengths and limitations of methods across the three articles
Theories used to explain the problem
Did the authors refer to theories to explain what they discovered?
Yes, which ones? Summarize key principles of theories used
Conclusion:
Summarize the main points addressed in the previous sections of the paper
What do you think still needs to be done regarding research on your topic? In other words, what aspects of the problem were not addressed in the articles?
What are the limitations of the articles in terms of the quality, reliability, and validity of research methods used?
