In this section, you will use information from the FAO Drainage Paper No. 24 referenced in lecture.  Access Chapter 6 – ETcSingle crop of that document using the following link: http://www.fao.org/3/x0490e/x0490e0b.htm
Browse the FAO chapter and answer the following questions:

1. Referencing Table 11, what are the lengths of the growth stages for a watermelon field if grown in Italy’s Mediterranean climate? Write down the lengths of the specific growth stages.
2. Referencing Table 12, what are the crop coefficient values (Kc) per growth stage for a watermelon field? Write down these specific crop coefficient values.
3. Draw an idealized graph of a crop coefficient (Kc) curve for a watermelon crop planted on April 1st, using the obtained information about the length of growth stages and respective crop coefficient values. Be sure to label the x-axis and y-axis with their corresponding titles and units.

SECTION B: [25 points] Evapotranspiration (ET)
This next part involves reference evapotranspiration and crop coefficients using data from the California Irrigation Management Information System (CIMIS).

1. Find the daily reference evapotranspiration (ETo) for Davis, California for the following three dates in 2020: April 7, May 25, and July 18.

To access the data, perform the following steps:

1. Go to the CIMIS website here: https://cimis.water.ca.gov/
3. After logging in, on the “Data” page tab, create a Daily Station Report in .CSV format (or other format of your choice) in Metric Units for a date range to include the dates listed above.
4. Select the Davis CIMIS Station #6, run the report, and then the .csv file will be downloaded to your computer.
5. Write down those values and their units for the daily ETo for Davis, California for these three dates in 2020: April 7, May 25, and July 18.
2. Next, use the respective crop coefficients (Kc) for a watermelon field (as determined above in Section A) to calculate the daily crop evapotranspiration (ETc) from watermelon fields in Davis, CA on April 7, May 25, and July 18. Which date has the greatest daily ETc,? Discuss why that date has the greatest daily value of ETc.
3. Using the ETo found above for May 25, 2020, determine the Kc value for a bare soil field assuming a 20-day wetting frequency by referencing slides from Lecture 15 on Crop Coefficients. Using those values, calculate the daily ETc from bare soil on May 25, 2020.
4. Calculate how much less daily ETc the bare soil field would use than the watermelon field for May 25, 2020.

SECTION C: [20 points] Frost Protection

Consider the diagram below and also recall the diagram examples presented in lecture.  This hypothetical orchard was planted in a valley area between two areas slightly higher in elevation.  There is a small stream or river that flows down into the bordering edge of the valley.

1. To protect the orchard from damage from cold air entering the valley at night (in general), what three methods of frost protection could you suggest that the orchard land managers implement? [Note: one of your suggestions should be a “passive method” of frost protection, and the other two suggestions should be “active methods” of frost protection.]
2. Discuss your suggested passive method of frost protection in detail to explain specifically how this method works to prevent frost damage. (Please use 3-5 sentences for your explanation.)
3. Discuss your suggested active methods of frost protection in detail to explain specifically how these methods work to prevent frost damage. (Please use at least 4 sentences for your explanation, but no more than two paragraphs.)
