Behaviour Modifications

Describe how you would modify behaviours using certain procedures. From the list below, select three problem topics, and explain how you might address each through specific behaviour-modifying strategies and interventions.
o Out-of-seat behaviour in the classroom
o Public-speaking anxiety
o Absenteeism from school
o Learning your part in a play
o Personal hygiene (one’s own or one’s children’s)
o Pain management
o Advertising a new toothbrush
o Reducing vaping
o Fear of thunder
o Improving your partner’s ability to remember where they put their keys
o Putting off doing this assignment
o Learning a complex sports skill
Please do:
1. Public-speaking anxiety – Write using “Pavlovian conditioning”

Possible strategies and interventions for behaviour modification are described for the above 3 problems in quotes.

The interventions will require a within-subjects design. Acceptable procedures are as follows: Pavlovian conditioning, reinforcement, extinction, punishment, vicarious conditioning, discrimination training, shaping, fading, and chaining. If you choose punishment, please give a strong justification given all the potential problems associated with this method.
Although you are encouraged to speculate, such speculations should be based on a thorough understanding of the applicability of the behavioural strategies covered in the text. Any supporting citations should be dominated by current journal articles (i.e., primary sources). Use three references for each of the three topics. A list of sources is given below:

DO NOT use any primary sources other than found in any of the above journals. Also need access to the text: Chance, P. (2014). Learning and behavior (7th ed.). Belmont, CA: as a fourth reference for each of the 3 topics.

In answering each topic, you need to:
i) demonstrate how you would measure the effectiveness of your intervention
ii) consider all the factors affecting the efficacy of each procedure
iii) the possible limitations of your intervention
iv) comment on any potential difficulties in maintaining changes and how these might be overcome
v) briefly explain the etiology of the selected problem (in learning theory terms).
You are expected to write approximately 700 words per topic, for a total of approximately 2,100 words for the whole paper.

Please use 12-point Times New Roman font and one-inch margins all around. Primary citations within the text are to follow the APA format.

Rubric
Each of the three topics will be assessed based on the following criteria, and a composite score will be awarded for each criteria.

Behavioural techniques Excellent understanding of the behavioural techniques discussed and a well-written, interesting rationale for their use in selected areas (across all topics). Appropriate definition of the problem. /30

Limitations/efficacy Recognition of the potential limits of an intervention. Awareness of all factors impacting the efficacy of the indicated procedures. /20

Behaviour maintenance Recognition of the importance of strategies for maintaining behaviour change and awareness of how problems of maintenance might be overcome. /15

Measurement Recognition of the importance of appropriate measurements in determining success and descriptions of how such measurements would be implemented. /10
