BSS053-6 Sustainable Business Management

You need to write an individual academic report that critically explores the threats and opportunities to the case study organisation from sustainability issues, including climate change and resource constraints and make recommendations to the company that are appropriate to that business.

You should use the case study first given to you at the start of the unit and build on your feedback from the first assessment. Reflect on the case study videos looking specifically for information about how climate change, resource scarcity and other examples of sustainability issues are expected to affect the organisation in the future. Then carry out your own independent research to find out how these global issues are likely to affect the region the case study is situated in. Apply what you know about these global issues and their regional impacts to what you know about the case study company. Critically discuss the specific and relevant threats and opportunities to the case study company.

You should situate your report within the context of environmental management and explain the terms you use. This must include the ‘Business Case’ for sustainability and you should consider how far you consider the ‘Business Case’ is demonstrated in the activities / motivations you have been analyzing. This is likely to include consideration of leadership for sustainability. Make recommendations that are relevant and specific to the company.

Note (1): This assessment is exploring the impact of sustainability on the company. This is different from assessment 1, which looked at the impact of the company on sustainability.

How do I produce high quality work that merits a good grade?
We will be filling this section in together in class on week 1: make sure you have downloaded/printed out the Assignment Brief and bring it to the session with you. You should use the grading criteria to help you.
How does this assignment relate to what we are doing in scheduled sessions?
The teaching will set the context of the unit within the ‘Business Case’ for sustainability. Throughout the unit, the teaching will explore how, and how far, this concept is capable of supporting sustainable business management. Links will also continue to be made throughout the unit to an Environmental Management Systems approach using the revised international standard, ISO14001:2015. We will explore global sustainability issues and how these issues are likely to have various regional and local impacts. Business leaders will need to be aware of how these sustainability issues are likely to affect them – in their localities, with their business functions – in order to develop appropriate strategies. The critical importance of leadership for sustainability is also explored in the teaching. We will explore how leadership motivation and values influence strategy and the implications for this for going beyond ‘quick wins’ to engage in longer term change.

Communications skills sessions are provided alongside teaching to support you with the ongoing development of your academic writing and presentation skills.

How will my assignment be marked?
