Case study – analyzing conflict

Throughout the semester, we’ll be building an 8-10 page paper through academic research. You have two options for this paper. You can do a theory paper in which you explore a particular term or concept and how it is developed or used in conflict literature or you can do a case study in which you explore a particular conflict event examining how the interpersonal and/or intergroup conflict concepts or methods are used to manage that conflict. Both papers should incorporate peer-reviewed academic research with at least 4 peer-reviewed sources. The project is broken in several steps including proposal (2 pages), theory/case overview (4 pages), final paper (8-10 pages), and a presentation.
Final Paper Instructions
In the final paper, you’ll be making an argument that builds on the knowledge of conflict that we’ve started constructing in class. There are two avenues open to do this.
1) Case Study. This paper is an analysis of a personal conflict in which you were involved. It’s a breaking the conflict down to it’s parts, examining them with an academic lense, and seeing what lessons this case teaches us about conflict or how to manage it.
Organizing Content
I would like to see the following sections. These headings are not necessary, but you’re encouraged to write your own that are more appropriate to your paper
Introduction – This should be brief, but describe the nature of the relationship and contain a clear thesis
Analysis – This is the body of your paper and should take the bulk of the space. The tricky part will be that you don’t have time to talk about all the concepts listed in Chapter 7’s “comprehensive guide.” You’ll need to provide analysis that supports your thesis and only talk about what is relevant to your argument.
Conclusion and Interventions – This should be simple and clear. Think about this section as goal setting. We can’t set 30 goals and actually expect to make progress on them. Narrow it down to perhaps (suggested, not prescribed) three actions items. Based on your analysis, what steps would you undergo to better manage this conflict?
