Case Study: Managing Resistance

You are the new Vice President of Student Services at a large public institution. You accepted the position at the campus partly because of your strong commitment to and appreciation of diversity. The student population is diverse with 9% of students identifying as African-American/Black; 10% as Biracial/Other; 23% as Mexican-American/Hispanic; 24% as Asian/Pacific Islander; 31% White; and 3% declined to state. The university has struggled with strategies to support the students, who continue to grow more and more diverse. Students have complained that they feel isolated in classes, which are most taught by older White males. They do not believe they have a “voice” on campus. Cultural events are absent from campus life; curriculum is very dominant-centered and attempts to develop student organizations to change the campus culture, have been continually failed due to lack of support from the leadership. Faculty have been resistant to diversity training, citing that the high persistence and graduation rate across the race, class, culture, etc.

For this week’s discussion address the following questions: What immediate things can you do to demonstrate your commitment to and appreciation of diversity to the campus as a whole? How would you begin to move in a direction to institutionalize your personal commitment? What strategies would you utilize to combat resistance to change?
