In the not too distant past, nurses shaved patients’ surgical sites in preparation for their surgery; they taught mothers to clean their baby’s umbilical cord with alcohol; and best practice “back in the day” had nurses injecting low dose heparin to maintain the patency of every patient’s IV lock. Since then, newer knowledge directing those practices has changed to reflect current evidence from research. These are but a few of the many examples of how evidence-based practice is critical to safe and effective patient care.
Using the information collated and analyzed in their review of literature students will develop an evidence-based practice poster that addresses and helps to answer the PICO(T) question. This evidence-based practice poster will integrate research and theory to arrive at what is best practice for the clinical problem identified in the PICO(T) question.

Poster Guidelines for What’s the Evidence?
Purpose
Why display an evidence-based practice poster? To answer this question, think about your nursing practice. Why do you choose one clinical course of action over another? Have you always done it that way? Were you taught that way? Or did you attend a conference, or read a journal article that made you think you should use a different approach than you had done previously? How much do research findings have to do with the reason for why you practice as you do? Is there a best practice that your clinical unit should be following but is not? Are the nurses on your unit having problems making a change in practice?

Best practice is integral to the optimal outcomes nursing. Yet “best practice” can be out-of-date within a few years. Nurses must continually re-evaluate the efficacy of patient care interventions. Nurses should have procedures, pathways, quality improvement tools, and
policies that are grounded in research. However, it can be difficult to keep abreast of new research findings with a busy work schedule.

A What’s the Evidence poster can help you and other nurses keep up with the latest findings on relevant clinical matters. Evidence-based practice is the application of the best evidence to practice in a given clinical setting. It takes place when research study findings are translated into or guide clinical interventions. These interventions can be used in practice to improve patient outcomes. Topic: The topic should be energetic, concise, reflect the EBP project undertaken, and be relevant to current nursing practice.
Participants: Who completed on the project; include credentials and affiliation (e.g., UMFK BSN Student)
Audience: Who will be affected by the findings from this EBP project as specified on the PICO(T) worksheet?
PICO(T): Question guiding this clinical EBP project
Introduction/Issue/Purpose: What is the status of the problem with respect to current nursing practice? What are current standards or nursing practice related to PICOT question? What are the obstacles or outcomes, and why does it or do they pose a problem? Use bullet points to present information
Review of Literature: The poster outlines the current evidence-based literature in the field as related to the specified clinical problem. It outlines what has been tested or what influences current clinical practice based on what’s available in the research literature, and how current outcomes in one’s clinical workplace can be improved through integration of best evidence. Use bullets to display relevant information
Body of the Text: The majority of the poster describes key issues, current practice, and latest research. Break the text into 3-5 logical sections with short headings. Each section can include bullet points.
Summary/Conclusion: Make a summary bullet statement about the findings from the research, including what is known and what is lacking in the research. Then provide a definitive statement about what the current research tells nurses (or other healthcare professionals). What do these findings say in relation to the PICO(T) question? Is a change in practice needed? Why or why not? If a change is indicated, what is needed to make the necessary change at the clinical setting specified in the PICO(T)? What is the next step with respect to nursing practice?
