Current Event Project –Women, Music, Culture

Goals:
-To raise an awareness of the roles of women in contemporary culture
-To raise an awareness of important similarities and differences between our historical study and contemporary themes
-To present an array of topics across multiple disciplines, including the arts, finance, sports, and politics
-To gain confidence in exploring topics that may be unfamiliar
-To think critically about course themes and to encourage other to do so

Assignment:

1. Prepare a “portfolio” of current events based upon class themes of gender & society.

Scope
-The current event should have occurred within the last 3 years.
-You may address the role of women in any aspect of society.
-The current event may discuss a single individual or a group (or information that affects a group such as legislation).

2. Summarize AT LEAST 3 CURRENT EVENTS using three key elements for each:
a. summary of the article(s)
b. relationship to class material (themes)
c. personal commentary on the 2 items above

Content
-Students should display a thorough understanding of the event as well as a working knowledge of key elements/people/ideas mentioned therein. The best way to demonstrate this skill is through comparison/contrast with topics we have discussed in class.
-Reports should be approximately 1-2 pages for each entry/article

3. You may draw your examples from any medium (internet, print, etc.). Cite the full article(s) at the beginning of each entry. If the sources are taken from the internet, then please include the full URL. When necessary, you may include photos in your portfolio to aid in your commentary/report.

4. Compile your reports into one single Word document and submit by the date listed on the course syllabus.
