WE BEGIN OUR FINAL ESSAY THIS WEEK!
We now shift our focus to the research paper, and a return to our original theme for the course —
*“Defining Borders, Barriers, Resistance, and Change:
Mapping Movements and Migrations.”*
Over the next three weeks, in groups, you will select a related essay (Ai Weiwei’s “The Refugee Crisis Isn’t about Refugees. It’s about Us.”), research the focus or topic (what other authors have written on it; what policy, legislation, movements have developed around it). Only critical essays found on the college database or through Google Books are acceptable; though such sources as The Guardian, The New York Times, The Atlantic, The New Yorker are acceptable (though each group is responsible for establishing criteria). Each group member should have an area of expertise and bring in three sources; and then, in an annotated bibliography (see the sample below), summarize and then verify (how did you determine the sources credibility?
In this week’s online session, for instance: You may use Ai Weiwei’s article, but you may also add articles that deal with some of the issues we have discussed related to “barriers, borders, and migrations” if you cannot find a relevant article from our textbook. (Remember barriers and borders are real as well as social, cultural and psychological.)
* Discuss the ways “The Refugee Crisis” can be interpreted.
* Collaborate on a list of “secondary” sources for use, either as a substitute or in support of “The Refugee Crisis.”
* Be sure to summarize, paraphrase, and cite.
THIS WEEK, MORE WORK ON YOUR RESEARCH —
Continue to explore and read at least two sources (you’ll add one more later) relevant to your research essay, and shared with your group members through your Doc draft, which should include their (and my) comments on the usefulness of the sources.
Assemble and format your annotated Works Cited listing; and continue to revise your Google Doc draft based on comments from group members and the professor.
YOU MUST MAKE IT ABOUT AI WEIWEIS “ the refugee crisis isn’t about refugees, it’s about us” with include 3 critical essays found on google books, the guardian, The NY Times, the Atlantic, and the New Yorker as your sources
