*Rise of Fascism in Europe

  • –  Italy had joined the war in 1915 on the side of Britain and France. In return for their support, they had been promised certain lands north of Italy and other benefits; however, at the peace talks in Paris after the war, they didn’t get everything they had been promised and this caused deep resentment in the country. Partly as a result, groups of unhappy ex-soldiers and disgruntled citizens realised they were thought of as a second-class state by Britain, France and the USA. New nationalist movements sprung up and a new ideology, Fascism, came to challenge democracy in Italy. By 1922 Italy was under the leadership of fascism’s charismatic leader, Benito Mussolini, who would rule as dictator from 1926-43, forming an alliance with Germany’s own dictator, Adolf Hitler.
  • –  In Germany, the new form of government was too weak and was unable to suppress the rise of extreme forms of politics – fascism and communism. Many Germans ended WW1 unaware of why they had lost, believing in the ‘stab in the back’ myth, which argued that Germany’s new leadership had betrayed it and surrendered. Playing on this and the unhappiness with the Treaty of Versailles, Hitler and the Nazis were able to gain power by 1933.

  • –  In joining the war, the USA had shown itself to be a true global power. The British and French empires had both been hugely crippled by the costs of war and so it looked like it would be the perfect time for the US to step in and spread its diplomatic wings, leading the world in a new, more peaceful time; however, instead of this, the USA had different plans. It was so fed up with the imperialism and ‘corrupt’ politics of the European powers and empires, and it had lost over 116,000 men in WW1, and it turned in on itself, adopting a policy of ‘isolationism’ (isolation from foreign affairs). For two decades, the USA mostly turned a blind eye to what was going on in the world and focused inwardly, only officially coming out of isolation after the terrible bombing of Pearl Harbour in 1941, which prompted its joining of WW2.

***League of Nations

– As part of the Treaty of Versailles a brand new type of organisation came into being – a supranational (meaning above nations) organisation called the League of Nations. It was the idea of Woodrow Wilson, President of the USA. It was hoped that the League would prevent future wars by offering a forum and meeting place for countries to bring their problems/grievances instead of having to fight about things. It would be a bright new future. However, because of isolationism, the USA never joined and it was left to Britain and France to lead an organisation they never really believed in. The League always came second to their own national interest and, ultimately, it failed to address the grievances in Europe and to prevent WW2.
