The purpose of epidemiology is to is to describe and identify opportunities in which intervention is necessary. It is concerned with the distribution and determinants of health and disease, morbidity, injury, disability, and mortality in populations (Merck Veterinary Manual, n.d.). Public health officials investigate disease outbreaks to control them, to prevent additional illnesses, and to learn how to prevent similar outbreaks from happening in the future by way of vaccines, recommendations of altered public health behaviors and timely responses to the community. There are a team of disease detectives that are involved in the process and they include—epidemiologists, laboratory scientists, statisticians, physicians and other health care providers, and public health professionals (CDC, 2012).
It is important to use a planned approach to epidemiology as it is essential to public health and again is paramount in controlling disease outbreak, prevention of further illness, and to learn how to prevent further outbreaks. The following steps in investigating disease outbreaks are used by the CDC: prepare for field work, confirm the existence of an outbreak, verify the diagnosis, establish a working case definition, engage in systematic case finding, apply descriptive epidemiology, develop and test hypotheses (analytical epidemiology), implement control measures, and communicate findings (Merck Veterinary Manual, n.d.). It is important to apply the knowledge gained from epidemiological studies. In medicine, there is a diagnosis and a prescription for appropriate treatment of a patient, which is a combination of the clinician’s scientific knowledge with experience, judgment, and understanding of the patient. Similarly, an epidemiologist uses the scientific methods of descriptive and analytic epidemiology as well as experience, judgment, and understanding of local public health conditions, and diagnosing and proposing appropriate health interventions to control and prevent disease in the community (CDC, 2012).
