Key Features of Argumentative Writing

  • Main Claim
  • Sub Claims
  • Evidence
  • Reasoning
  • Counterargument

Key Characteristics of Credible Evidence

  • Evidence should come from Credible Sources: governmental agency data, respected news outlets, peer-reviewed articles.
  • Sources to Avoid: Clickbait websites, commercial websites that are selling products, sources with well-known political bias (Fox News, MSNBC, Huffington Post, etc.), blogs and other individual postings unless you can show that the author is a credentialed expert who does not have a reputation for bias.
  • The exception to this rule is when you use a biased source to show illustrate a particular position and acknowledge their bias in your writing.
  • Per TED Talk from Unit 2

Process

  • Choose a narrow facet or aspect of a problem to which you will propose a response
  • Do research in order to accurately understand that facet/aspect of the problem, where such policies are made and what is currently being done to respond to it
  • Notice the different perspectives about what should be done
  • Apply an ethical approach to thinking about what new or different thing should be done or what current response should be expanded or altered
  • Use the credible facts you have gathered to make an argument for your position
  • In the argument, acknowledge at least one reasonable alternative position and rebut it

Non-Negotiable Requirements

  • The paper must be organized into paragraphs. I do not accept papers that do not have paragraphs.
  • All source material must be introduced with signal phrases.
  • When material from a single source is discussed at length, the source should be re-signaled throughout the discussion.
  • A Works Cited (MLA) or References (APA) page that is organized alphabetically must be included. It is not included in word count. I will not accept a paper if the Works Cited or Reference page is not in alphabetical order.
