Fur Trappers
In my paper I plan to compare two primary sources, first I will examine Michael Punke’s novel The Revenant-A Novel of Revenge and review how much fiction and how much truth lie within. The second source will be the 2015 movie The Revenant that was directed by Alejandro G. Iñárritu and stars Leonardo DiCaprio and Tom Hardy. The movie is based on the book, and thus I decided to compare them and report major differences and how the book was realized as a motion picture. Furthermore, I intend to explain the historical context in which the myth of the mountain men and fur trappers arose. As an example, I will closely examine the life of Hugh Glass, who is a real American fur trapper and is the main character in both the movie and the novel mentioned above. In order to acquire a well-rounded picture about the life and hardships of the fur trappers, I will work with several different sources; mostly articles from academic journals, as during my first research I found the most promising sources in publications like that. Additionally, I am considering to incorporate more stories and facts about different individuals, as the book Mountain Men and Fur Traders of the Far West: Eighteen Biographical Sketches includes numerous entries about famous fur trappers.
