Read and Respond (20 marks) Step 1- Your professor will assign you a reading to study. This reading will likely be an essay that you have already seen in class this semester. Step 2 – Read the essay that you have been assigned and think about what you will say for the following instructions: * Explain the main point (idea) of the reading in your own words. Remember one or two sentences is probably enough. * Identify three points that support the main idea in the reading. How do these supporting ideas help the main idea? Use your own words. Remember that you do not need to retell the reading. You only need to identify the supports and explain them a little bit; discuss how each support links to the main idea. * Introduce and Discuss two interesting words or phrases from the reading. Explain their meanings and the context in which the writer uses them. * Introduce and develop your personal opinions about the ideas presented in your reading. Be sure to link your ideas to the reading Step 3- Now you will create a video file on eCentennial. Here are the steps you should follow: Log onto eCentennial and enter your COMM 141 course shell. Go to “Assignment” (click on the “Assessments” tab.) Find the assignment folder for this speaking assignment and click on it. You will now see an area to submit your assignment. Above the text box, locate the “Record Video” button. Make sure your webcam is ready. When you are ready, click on the “Record Video” button and then click the “New Recording” button. You will now record yourself for this assignment for 3 to 8 minutes. When you are finished recording, press the “Stop Recording” button and then press the “Add” button. Now, enter a title for your recording. (Your complete name and student number is a good idea.) The last step is to press the “SUBMIT” button. Your professor will now be able to view and listen to your recording. Your recording should be between 3 minutes and 8 minutes long. Note: You will get a maximum of 8/20 if you leave a message less than 3 minutes long. Important Notes: *This assignment places a strong emphasis on the fluency and naturalness of your spoken language, so in order to achieve a high score in fluency (see the rubric), speak conversationally and avoid just reading from a script. If you do not provide naturally spoken, conversational English, you will not receive higher than a 2/5 in the part of the evaluation that focuses on fluency, and it is possible that you will in fact receive a 0/5 in this section. *Remember to use your own words! Not using your own words will result in a significant loss of marks. You might fail the assignment if you do not use your own words. It is possible to receive a 0% total if you do not use your own words. * If your assignment is completely off-topic, you will receive a 0% total overall. * You professor will assign the reading that you should focus on for this assignment. If you do not use your assigned reading, it is very likely that you will receive a 0% total because your assignment will be completely off-topic. Therefore, please follow your professor’s instructions.
