In this essay, you are required to use a concept from our David Tyack reading “Ways of Seeing…” as a lens with which you critically interpret a contemporary educational controversy or debate of your choice the topic or “exhibit” that is interesting to you or about which you are motivated to say something or make a claim. The artful use of another person’s idea to say something worthwhile about a concern of yours will not be easy, but this is what an excellent lens essay accomplishes. In other words, you should look through or with your chosen lens concept at the school controversy/debate in order to see something which would not be visible otherwise and explicate/demonstrate that for a general, critical audience who you assume knows nothing about either the lens concept or the topic/exhibit. A good lens essay will: Motivate the reader to care about your exhibit / explain the stakes of the problem Render the exhibit in all relevant detail Demonstrate a thorough engagement with the lens text by defining the lens concept Employ one concept from the lens text to analyze your topic/exhibit Justify the lens/exhibit pairing; demonstrate their fit Develop your claim or argument concerning the exhibit, and restrict the scope of your claim to the argumentation and evidence you have written in the essay Present the claim or argument in an organized, logical fashion. Rendering the exhibit: How thoroughly are both the details & context of the topic/debate/issue/controversy presented? Engagement with the lens text: How well does the essay present and define the lens concept? Argument: How probing, creative, and/or thoughtful is your interpretation of, or stance toward, the lens exhibit pair? How developed are the logical connections between component claims? How well tailored is the argument or claim to the reasoning or evidence presented in the essay? Form, Style & Mechanics: How closely does the essay follow the rules & conventions of academic prose? How varied are the sentences structures? How precise is the vocabulary? The essay must be 5-7 pages in double-spaced, 12-point Times New Roman font, with one inch margins on numbered pages (except page 1). Include your name, course and section, and date in a single-spaced header on page 1. After your text, include a word count and reference list in Chicago, MLA, or APA format.
