Compose an original essay that demonstrates your critical thinking about a specific cultural movement(s) or work(s) of art that is directly relevant to the course readings.Critical thinking involves analyzing, interpreting, and arguing the significance of your topic. In selecting your topic and developing a claim about it, think about the topic’s value for demonstrating its relevance to Western culture and to the humanities in general.

An assignment that requires original, critical thinking can be intimidating. To get started, simply choose a particular piece of art, person, or period of history from the readings that has moved you personally in some way, and then reach an understanding of why this topic has affected you. Further, consider why this topic is still relevant and studied today. Why do we still care about it? Along this line of thinking you might explain how a work of art, architecture, music, or sculpture is still copied to this day and make a direct comparison between that work and a modern work. For example, you might compare Shakespeare’s Hamletto a specific modern novel or film, or you might explain how the portrait of the Mona Lisa is reflected in modern social media.

Even in a Critical Thinking Essay, discussing the relevance of a given work of art from a contemporary viewpoint is perfectly acceptable and interesting, but it is not the only way to approach the assignment. There is no right or wrong opinion to have on a topic that interests you, so do not be scared to have one. Research a topic to see what has been said and use the information from the sources you gather to support an opinion—any opinion—you have on that topic.

The biggest problem students have with this assignment is going too big. Remember, that you only have three to four pages to work with, so your topic must be narrow enough to adequately discuss within these limits. You would not want to choose the entire Enlightenment movement or all of the sculptures of Michelangelo, for example, to write about.

Introduction: Develop your essay with an introduction that both introduces and draws attention to your thesis. Your introduction should be at least five sentences long.

Thesis Statement: The last statement of your introduction must be your thesis statement. Your thesis statement must express the main idea of this essay. This means you must include both the subject of the essay and a claim about that subject.

Body Paragraphs: Begin each body paragraph with a topic sentence that relates to and develops your thesis. Your topic sentences must make a strong claim that reflects support for your thesis. Each body paragraph should contain seven to thirteen sentences, and your essay should contain at least three body paragraphs.

Conclusion: The conclusion summarizes the point of the essay and brings it to a logical and appropriate end. The conclusion contains your last words on the subject, a final thought or a question for the reader to consider. Conclusions do not present new information. Your conclusion should be at least five sentences long. Your conclusion should never be a verbatim restatement of your thesis statement.

I will grade your essay on the following:

  • Is the essay structured correctly? (introduction, body, conclusion)
  • Is there a thesis statement? Is it the last sentence of the introduction?
  • Does the thesis clearly identify the topic and make a clear claim about that topic?
  • Are there topic sentences that elaborate upon the thesis statement?
  • Is there support for each topic sentence, and is this support on track with the topic sentence that it intends to support?
  • Is the support well developed? Does the support digress at any point?
  • Is the essay coherent? Unified? Does it flow smoothly and use transitions?
  • Is there a minimum of mechanical and grammatical errors?
  • Is the essay formatted according to MLA requirements?
  • Are all sources documented internally with attributions and parenthetical citations according to MLA?
  • Are all sources documented externally on a works cited page according to MLA?
  • Is the essay coherent? Unified? Does it flow smoothly and use transitions?

  • Use the MLA research paper format without title page.
  • Provide explicit thesis and topic sentences.
  • Use no fewer than four sources; at least three of the sources must come from the RSU library.
  • Include a works cited page.
  • Include a minimum of three full pages but no more than four (works cited page not included), having one-inch margins, and using 12-point Times New Roman typeface.
  • Be sure no more than 10 percent of your paper is quoted material. No block quotes.
