For this essay, you’ll work with multiple sources.
You’ll use at least four separate sources for this composition. (The separate sources may include Elizabeth Kolbert’s book, Nathaniel Rich’s “Losing Earth,” articles from reliable periodicals such as Nature Magazine, National Geographic, The Atlantic, The New Yorker, and newspapers such as The New York Times, The Washington Post, the Sacramento Bee, [not Huffington Post].
You should be able to defend your selection of sources on the basis of the accuracy and validity of their content and argument.
By Saturday at 11:59 p.m., you will
Write an essay in which you organize the most persuasive evidence you have encountered so far through class readings, film, and other sources
include at least four separate topics of evidence (see above). (Choices range for example from ice cores, lake-bed sediment cores, sea-level rise, steady increases in temperature that correlate with steady increases in atmospheric CO2 levels, the demise of earlier civilizations, and so on. Your essay will be at least six paragraphs long, if not longer).
All evidence must be accurately presented in MLA format with citations, etc. Plagiary results in a Zero for the assignment.
The only evidence you must include and discuss is evidence from the study of ice cores. You must explain
how evidence is extracted from ice cores, and
what that evidence tells us about the historic record of climate and temperature. All other evidence will be of your choosing.
The Goal: To compose an argument best designed to induce a climate-science-skeptic to rethink his or her skeptical ideas about climate science and climate change
Audience Awareness: Employ a tone of writing that you believe will foster a willingness to listen. Avoid condescension or patronization.
Effective Conclusions: Provide a conclusion that does NOT repeat your introduction but shows your reader the new understanding of the significance of your topic and perception that your preceding claims, evidence, and development of ideas has led to.
Remember that a climate change skeptic
is not the same as a climate change denier!
This essay is your second of two written pieces. It is worth 200 points.
The goal of this assignment is to develop a credible, well-informed piece of persuasive prose that demonstrates your grasp of the importance of evidence, structure, and tone in writing about critically important issues.
