According to Charles Morris, Republicans would like to cut Social Security benefits, “presumably to protect the 1.5 trillion tax cut they passed in 2017” (2019, para. 3).  I think cutting social security would hurt society, the elderly in specific would have no means of survival when they retire. It would also hurt the rest of the economy since the government borrows money from the social security reserves for other expenses. Pattison, (2015 states the government repays the money borrowed from the social security reserves with interest. So really there is no difference if the money is kept away from the rest of the government and invested in the open market in the end the results are the same, (2015). On his article The Future of Social Security, Morris, cites that Elizabeth Warren (D-Mass.) expresses that one third of citizens who are about to retire are not prepared with savings at all; and a second third have some savings but are less then what they will need in retirement.  Warren further explains there was a time when companies provided loyal workers with pension plans; but that is not the case anymore 44 million employees count on Social Security only, Warren (as cited in Morris, 2019).
