Psyc 102: Written Assignment Psychology in everyday life
Throughout this course, we will cover a number of varied topics in the field of psychology. Despite the variety of topics, there are a number of repeating themes within this course. One of those themes is that psychology is applicable to day-to-day life. In this paper, you will write an essay to address the question: How will you use psychology in your life? There are a number of directions you could take with this question – you could discuss a future career path you are considering, a current or future relationship (with a partner, boss, friend etc.), or a current or future major life event (e.g. studying abroad, obtaining a job, moving to a new city, etc.). For this paper, you should choose one aspect of your life and describe how you will apply psychology to it.
This written assignment is designed to allow you to:
1) Demonstrate your understanding of major concepts within the course
2) Build your research skills by reading and describing academic research
3) Practice your written communication skills
4) Draw connections between the course material and your life
The question that you will be answering throughout the paper is “How will you use psychology in your life?” In your essay, you must describe one aspect of your life and draw connections between it and the psychology topics we have discussed this semester. Specifically, you must discuss:
1) Ideas from at least two different chapters that were covered this semester. Introduce each idea and explain it in your own words. You must cite the textbook and appropriate chapter when you introduce these ideas, and then describe how the topic(s) relates to your life. You must also include the textbook in your reference list.
2) Ideas from one peer-reviewed primary research article that has been published within the last 10 years (e.g. between 2010-2020) and relates to one of the psychology topics we have discussed. Use this article to further discuss the topics that you are describing as applicable to your life. You should briefly explain the article to demonstrate that you have understood the research (e.g. do not just mention it in passing). You must cite this research article within your paper and in your reference list.
A primary research article is one where the authors have conducted new research and report results. A primary research article usually has paper sections such as Abstract, Introduction, Methods, Results, Discussion.
For this paper, do not use a review article or an editorial (these articles may discuss research, but they do not report new results). For this paper, do not use sources such as a newspaper article, webpage, encyclopedia (or Wikipedia) entry, a magazine article (such as Psychology Today), or a blog post.
You should use PSYCinfo to find your article. When searching:
• Enter keywords that are related to your ideas (for example, if I was writing a paper about
how psychology relates to a career path, teaching, I might use the following keywords: international students, student stress, or student mental health. If I was writing a paper about how psychology relates to my relationship with my young nephew, I might use the following keywords: child development, play in toddlers, or language development).
