· For each journal entry, you will need to do the following 2 things (please label each section):

o Section 1. An initial response to the literary text. You will need to pick at least one of the following items and write at least 150 words answering it. Please write the question(s) to which you are responding at the top of the page.

§ What are the major conflicts that characters face in the text? How do the characters seek to overcome these conflicts?

§ How would you describe two or three of the major characters? Are they likeable? Do they make mistakes? What are their motives and intentions?

§ How does the language affect the text’s overall meaning? Is the language powerful? What emotions does the language evoke? What specific words create meaning?

§ What is the world view of the text? How does this world view differ or relate to our world view today?

§ Create a diary entry for one of the characters. You might choose a main character or a supporting character.

§ Write a story about what happened before the text begins or what happens after the text ends.

§ Write a series of tweets from one of the characters’ perspectives. Create a Twitter handle for that character.

§ Create a fake social media profile for a character (Facebook, online dating profile, Instagram). There are many places online that you can find templates for creating fake profiles for educational purposes.

o Section 2. The Who/What/When/Why. Write about who wrote the text (and a few details about that person), what genre (fiction, non-fiction, poetry, drama, etc.) it is, when it was written (date as well as any important information about this period in history that pertains to the text), and why the text is important. Much of this information will be provided for you in the “Headnotes” given before each reading and in the lessons in each unit. This section should be at least 150 words.

· You do not need to include a Works Cited entry at the end of your entries.

· You should follow the rules of Standard Edited American English. Even though this is a journal assignment, you still need to use correct grammar, punctuation, sentence structure, and paragraph formatting/structure. (please don’t give a summery about the text, just focus on who/what/when/why)
