Your response paper will respond to one of the following two questions, and it must refer to a minimum of two different readings and you must use textual evidence (with proper citation) to substantiate your argument. What is textual evidence? Textual evidence is used to support an argument or thesis. Use your textual evidence to avoid generalizations, to make a fair and balanced argument, to SHOW your reader you have an understanding of the issue and have appropriate evidence to support your thesis (argument).

Essay Format

As you see in the Rubric, you are assessed both for the essay’s CONTENT (do you engage with the scholarship appropriate to respond to the question you are answering; do you provide appropriate textual evidence?) and the FORMAT. We care about how you write your essay. Grammar and organization (do you have an introductory or concluding paragraph to direct your reader and organize your argument?) matter! If you write your essay in one long paragraph, we will deduct points.

All Essays Must Include:

  2. The “Body” of the Essay=the main paragraphs (I will not tell you how manyparagraphs you will require to write your essay) with supporting textual evidence
  3. Concluding paragraph (your last opportunity to convince your reader of your argument)
