Instructions:
Drawing on the readings (NRC Chapter 9; Travis et al. 2005; Christian et al. 2006; Naser & La Vigne 2006; Wildeman 2014; Murray et al. 2012; Hagan & Coleman, 2001; Foster & Hagan 2009; Johnston, 2006) in the section entitled “Collateral Consequences of Incarceration: Family Effects”, students are to discuss issues related to prisoner reentry in the United States from the family level. In other words, what impact does the reentry of ex-cons have on our nation’s families? First, provide some descriptive (i.e., factual) information regarding the prevalence/frequency of parental incarceration (Travis et al. 2005). Students should discuss the paradox of prisoner reentry for family members – i.e., while family members certainly bear the brunt of social and economic costs (Christian et al. 2006), the family is arguably the most pivotal of all social institutions in determining successful reentry (Naser & La Vigne). With regard to the collateral consequences of parental incarceration, discuss issues related to the potential intergenerational transmission of criminal behavior (Murray et al. 2012), and upward social mobility (Hagan & Coleman 2001; Foster & Hagan 2009). Lastly, what are some potential solutions or strategies on the part of our social/governmental institutions in helping to assist the families that have been “left behind” during our nation’s incarceration binge (see Travis et al. 2005; Johnston 2006)?
Format:

Grading Procedures:
The assignment will be evaluated based on how well the student addressed each part of the question, and moreover, how effectively they incorporate all of the readings into their answer. It goes without saying that the assignments should adhere to all of the popular conventions of the English language, and be virtually free of all egregious grammatical/spelling errors.
