Smartphones and the Internet

There is no final exam in this course. The last major project is to prepare and submit a final portfolio that showcases what you’ve learned this semester. Writing is a complex processthat often takes a lot of time, energy, and thought. The final portfolio is your opportunity to revisit your research project and present one final impression of your work.

Getting Started:The ultimate goal is not only to produce the best final documents that you can, but also to demonstrate that you have met most, if not all, of the learning outcomes specified for this course. As a reminder, our learning outcomes for this class are below:

• Develop, practice, and reflect on reading, writing, and research processes in response to a number of rhetorical situations;
• Engage and interact with texts and perspectives rhetorically in order to learn and practice the academic “moves” for making and supporting different kinds of arguments, including how to use a range of evidence to support claims;
• Ask effective questions and conduct focused research using a range of resources, including the library catalog and databases of scholarly articles;
• Recognize, evaluate, and reflect on the various types of research methods and sources, including primary research methods, that inform effective researched writing;
• Assemble a set of appropriate sources relevant to the issue being investigated and acknowledge clearly when and how the ideas and phrasings from these sources are used;
• Demonstrate authority, focus, development, source engagement, and English language use appropriate to varied contexts and audiences.
• Assess one’s own writing and the writing of others for effectiveness within specific rhetorical contexts and give and act on feedback through flexible revision strategies.

Rhetorical Considerations: Because the goal of your portfolio is to showcase your work, you will submit three pieces from the semester: 1) a reflection essay, 2) an edited and polished version of your annotated bibliography, and 3) a strategic revision of your research essay.

Reflection Essay: Your reflection essay provides evidence to show that you have met the outcomes of the course. In this essay, you will discuss your revision process and provide specific evidence from your work. You will need to discuss 3-4 of the learning outcomes for our class and elaborate in detail about how and why you believe you’ve met those outcomes.

Edited and Polished: Editing your annotated bibliography will require you to do formatting and sentence-level revisions that lead to a cleaner and more polished product.

Strategic Revision: “Revision” means “to see again.” This revisionshould demonstrate that you have made improvement in your writing and thinking about the assignment. The idea is to re-engage the material with a new perspective, having had a moment to step back from it and see it with fresh eyes.

Putting It Together: Your final portfolio should reflect your best efforts in this course. At a minimum, your portfolio must contain the following in this order:

1. Reflection essay
2. Edited and polished annotated bibliography
3. Revision of research essay

You will submit these three components as one complete document.Your portfolio is due Tuesday, December 1 by midnight.
