Painting One

The picture is adapted from the Philadelphia Museum of Arts, and it depicts a mother and child. The piece of art was created by Mary Stevenson Cassatt in the year 1908. From the museum, the picture measures on the length side 81.3 cm while the width has 60.6cm. The media that was used to make the drawings were oil and canvas. The love is being shown by the touch the mother is having for the child as it was good for the child’s growth. The shape that is shown in the picture is that of a two dimension design as it is simple. The color that used is that of shown well with a distinguishable presence of grey and yellow. Also, the value of the painting is illustrated by the light tone of the color in use as it has a clear contrast.

Painting Two

The painting is found in India and Mestiza Coyote, and it was created and painted by Jose de Alcibar in the year 1760. It was created in the Mexican city. The painting was drawn using canvas and oil. The dimensions of the picture are a length of 101cm and a width of 78.7cm. The picture depicts the love that is involved in a family that has one child. It also shows that families can exist in multiracial forms. The value of the picture presents a tone of contrast between grey and white. The shape of the picture is three dimensional as it has a geometrical shape. The lines that are used to make the painting, as used by the artist are the depiction of the people in the picture. Mary Stevenson Cassatt

Jose de Alcibar

When comparing Mary Stevenson Cassatt’s painting to Jose de Alcibar’s image, we can see that both pictures are of a family. One has a mother and her baby while the other has both parents and their baby. Even though both paintings depict a parent’s love for their baby, they have been presented differently to portray different ways that parents express love to their babies. The most important aspects to note when comparing Jose de Alcibar’s painting to that of Mary Stevenson Cassatt is value, color, and composition.

Mary Stevenson Cassatt chooses to use a lower value, while Jose de Alcibar’s painting has a higher value. Jose de Alcibar uses dark and light colors to create a three-dimension illusion to his picture, which shows the complexity of the nature of love portrayed. On the other hand, Mary Stevenson Cassatt’s painting brings out the image of simple and pure love for a mother to her child. The low value shows how the love between the two is simple, refined, and innocent.

Mary Stevenson Cassatt uses bright colors in her entire painting. We can see the mum’s yellow and white dress and the transparent window bringing light in the room. The bright colors magnify the happiness on both the mother and the baby’s faces and create a happy mood all over the painting. The bright, yellow dress also steals the viewer’s focus and concentrates it on the mother and baby other than the entire room. Jose de Alcibar chooses to use deeper and darker colors in his painting. The combination of dark and a few bright colors makes the viewer focus on the entire picture. The bright colors’ strategic positioning in the image makes it difficult for the viewer to focus on only one part of the painting. The darker colors bring an anxious mood to the picture showing how the parents are eager to provide for their baby.

Mary Stevenson Cassatt’s painting has minimal composition. It comprises a mother, her baby, and a little part of the room, which makes the mother and baby the painting’s focus. We can see that the baby has naked but happy. The picture shows us that the mother is only concerned with making her baby happy. There is no way of telling whether they are rich or not because the painting’s main aim is to display the mother and baby’s joy. Jose de Alcibar’s image comprises a couple, their child, and two piles of different food. We can conclude that the couple is wealthy, given the amount of food displayed and their clothes’ quality. The father is holding a piece of bread, and the baby is fully clothes, which shows us that the couple’s primary concern is providing for their baby.

Mary Stevenson Cassatt and Jose de Alcibar’s paintings depict the love of parents to their children. Still, Mary’s image displays pure love with no concern for anything else but happiness, while Jose’s picture shows two parents’ efforts to provide for their child. The choice of color, value, and composition brings out a tremendous difference between the paintings. One is bright and displays a happy mood while the other displays complexity and anxiety of parents to provide for their baby.

Painting One

The artwork “Mother and Child” is a 1908 oil on canvas by Mary Stevenson Cassatt that shows a mother sitting while carrying her child. Despite being born in America, Cassatt practiced her work in France where she was highly acknowledged for her talent. “She became the only American artist to exhibit with the Impressionists in Paris.” (“Art Story” par 1). One of the significant aspects of impressionist art that has been captured in the artwork is the inclusion of visible strikes of brush. “Brushwork became rapid and broken into separate dabs in order to render the fleeting quality of light.” (“Art Term” par 2). This has been captured on the yellow clothing worn by the mother and the background area of the artwork. The use of light is also a significant feature of the impressionist painting that has been captured in the artwork. Light improves the visibility of the artwork and has been captured in the bright colors that have been used by Cassatt in her artwork. Impressionist artists also captured movement in their work. The aspect of movement is depicted on the face of the mother and child who are seen to be smiling at each other.

Painting Two

The painting by Jose de Alcibar is a is a good representation of baroque painting due to the aspect of dynamism that is captured in the work. The baroque art was known to “emphasize on light and its effects” (“The Art Story” par 4). The artist uses dark colors in the artwork to separate different aspects of the painting. Another significant feature of the artwork is the aspect of unity that has been captured in the arrangement of the elements in the artwork. The man, woman and child cover the central part of the artwork making them the primary focus of the painting.

Emotion is another significant feature that has been captured in the artwork which is depicted in the expressions on the face of the human figures in the artwork. Baroque type of art was known for its theatrical appearance (“Painting of the Baroque Period | Boundless Art History” par 3). This is captured in the actions of the human elements in the artwork. The artist was able to capture the element of movement in the artwork through the use of lines. Lines have also been used to build space ion the artwork. The lines facilitate the arrangement of the elements in the artwork which brings out the representation of a three dimensional space within a two dimensional surface.

STEP 5

      Cause and effect Section 1.

Painting 1

The painter uses bright color in the painting, which is a form of yellow and orange to represent the warmth of the mother to the child and the emotions of happiness created between them. Also, the mother is smiling at the child to show a rich reward and uniquely pleasurable experience, which promotes responsive maternal care that was vested in the traditional beliefs of ancients parents towards their children (Doyle, 2017). The child is painted without cloth because it shows the aesthetic value of nature they and experience they get as they grow up. It can also be considered that the time the art was taken place was hot, which the child could not persevere. The woman was alone with a child to show their ability to be independent in their lives and also shows they are radical, which was the intended message the author wanted people to understand about the modernity in terms of equal representations of genders. The wall was painted orange to signifies fearlessness of a woman in an assertive environment, which correspond to aggression, domination and thirst for action. The child is happy in the art because of having enough nurture and love from the mother, which brings a sense of belonging and forming a strong attachment. “A child’s emotional understanding comprises an ability to recall and explain their own emotional experiences and an ability to recognise emotion in themselves and in other people,” (Pope, Butler &Qualter, 2012). The window is drawn in the art to draw us into another world that can make a child and mother tangible and identifies. The window is shut to indicate how the dreams of women are prevented from expressing themselves, and the painting looks like sketch because it is all about communicating an idea and allow the viewers fill their blanks using their reasoning. The use of both yellow and grey colors was used together to show the various representation of women with children and the challenges that surround them.

Painting 2

The painter made the art with a dark, dull color in the painting to show how family matters during ancient was treated and how strong the message is in the picture and the man is introduced in the picture to show a complete family representation, and he stands to be the head. The ancient family composition was only complete when there were a mother, children and a father. Also, the fruits in the painting show how art can come into life, which the artist was ushering a contemporary food for the family. By staying at the child by both a man and women signify that it was their source of happiness they got from their marriage and everyone looks up to the child. For instance, when a child was born in ancient life, they formed a source of happiness and love in the family. The item that a man is holding in the picture could be a gift for his child and shows him as a sign of love. Both the man and woman are dressed in robes as an outer garment to indicate family unity and companionship they have with each other. The use of a different color to portray the fruits is done to signify how they are relevant in the life of people, which is a symbol of peace. From the picture, it is put just in front of the family and nearly between them to indicate as uniting factor in their lives as children do. The inclusion of a window in the painting is to allow the light to penetrate through the family that will lead them in the course of their lives.
