Essay #3: Technology

Atticus states, “I think there is something broken in our generation there are so many sad eyes on happy faces” (Atticus). The article Technology Addiction: An Exploratory Study of the Negative Impact of Technology on Consumer Welfare, exemplifies Atticus’s quote, Technology is now more than ever serving as a double-edged sword with more unfavorable consequences than favorable. Technology keeping its promise to make life easier is where the problems begin. It retains its commitment by having anything and everything available at your reach. Waking up in the morning, most grab their cellphones and scroll their social media, emails, and text messages, all before saying good morning to the person they share a bed with. Should this be considered an expectable norm? In the article, it is said, “Technology is one of the most important symbols of advancement and has been reshaping the fabric of society for generations. While normal use of Technology will improve and enrich the consumer’s life, overuse and abuse of Technology can lead to addiction and have a long-lasting negative impact on consumer welfare.” (Page 1, par 2).

Technology from generation to generation seemed to transition from “improving” life by providing convenience with each new advancement to “abuse” of that convenience and accessibility. The comfort of Technology in devices such as cellphones, tablets, and video consoles seem so fulfilling. You feel bored you? Check social media pages on my phone, watch YouTube, and play video games on my console. In today’s generation, this behavior and actions seem to repeat from the oldest member of the household to the youngest before even saying their first word. The need for fulfillment and the fear of being bored is the onset of technology addiction. The urge to use Technology and most not being able to stop is what makes Technology harmful to today’s society. The article further supports my position, as it states, “However, mounting evidence suggests that TA is a serious problem and can no longer be ignored. Americans are starting to show serious signs of dependence on their cell phones (Licoppe and Heuritin 2001; Wikle 2001) (page 1 par 3).

Spend time with family and friends lately. How many times did you or he/she look at the phone while talking to each other? What was your need to do so? The accessibility that Technology has given us makes us intensely crave it. An example of a source of Technology craved and needed is social media such as Instagram and Facebook. Society has lost control of social media and has done so by allowing it to consume our time and affect our perspective on life. From experience, I say this is a problem. I first noticed the severity of the problem from observing my 13-year-old niece and 17-year-old nephew all summer; we looked forward to going to Disney World for the first time as a family we are visiting “The Happiest Place On Earth.” And there we were in the Magic Kingdom with two teenagers not happy at all. My niece and nephew are on the verge of an anxiety attack because it is 10:00 AM, and we are not going to the hotel till around 5:00 PM, and their phone is on 10%. It did not matter that most kids only dream of being where they are. The thought of being disconnected and not having access to Snapchat or Instagram seemed far more important than enjoying the here and now. This experience seems like the definition of Technology Addiction played out in real life.  In the article, it is defined ” As a compulsive, unnecessary use of technology that interferes with the individual’ s life, as well as his/her mental and/or physical wellbeing.” These outlets of Technology seemed to have affected them deeply. Disney was a wake-up call, and shortly after returning home, I started to notice. How they no longer enjoyed anything if their phone was not in hand, opposed to being out my niece seemed to just stay home on the phone Instagram, Tik Tok, and Snapchat and repeat and my nephew on the console no interest in socializing and making any friends watching friends seemed enough. This felt depressing to watch, and I saw how it spiraled to self-isolationand depression nothing seemed to make them happy. The easy accessibility of the instant virtual connection created isolation for kids that have a hard time making friends. It makes it easier to never make friends. They stay on their phone and watch as other kids socialize, and this is their addiction newly found addiction. I see it affecting children before they even speak their first word. They are given a phone tuned to YouTube, the moment the is the easiest convenient solution for the parent, in thevideo’s children are playing with toys; children watching videos of other children playing with toys. The beginning of convenience planting harmful seeds of need supported by technology.

Overall, the unfavorable consequences of the advances in Technology are harming more than solving in areas that should be of crucial importance. The isolation and depression brought on by the abuse of Technology sadly will only worsen as the need for it will only get more demanding. We can only expect to see many more sad eyes and happy faces as generations are given access to the new and great Technology.
