The use of Haber process

The Haber process is a chemical reaction of N2 (g) +3H2 (g) =2NH3 heat of enthalpy = -92.6 kJ/mole, a method of producing synthetic ammonia. This chemical reaction is one of the most important process used around the world. Chemical industry use ammonia as a fertilizer. However, it is also used for the creation of bombs, explosives and nylon. Throughout this, I will compare and contrast the positive and negative effects of the use of the Haber process. Also, the controversy that follow Haber Nobel Prize in Chemistry. Furthermore, I will give my opinion on Haber award for invention of the Ammonia.

The Haber process is important because it was the first process created that permit people to produce plant fertilizers using ammonia. Haber process are used to feed millions of people around the word. This process helps farmers to grow more products due to the fact that the population were growing larger. The positive effects the Haber process have on the world is not just the use of ammonia as a fertilizer, it can also be found in the chemical industry such as drug synthesis, and functionalization of compounds. It can also be use as cleaning agent that many households use. As the population grow the Haber process will always be needed.

“The Haber- Bosch process was also vital to manufacturing nitrogen- based explosives for the German Army during World War I” (Everts,2015). Although, the Haber process was first created with the good intension of helping the growing population, it was later used to manufacture explosives weapons that killing thousands of people during World War I. In today society, the use of ammonia is destroying your environments, the making of ammonia requires enormous amount of fossil fuel which can also produce the same amount of Carbon dioxide (CO2).  It contributes to climate change, it a threat to humanity.

According to the Institute for Industrial Productivity, “The massive carbon footprint exists because although the Haber-Bosch process represents a huge technological advancement, it’s always been an energy-hungry one. The reaction, which runs at temperatures around 500 °C and at pressures up to about 20 MPa, sucks up about 1% of the world’s total energy production. It belched up to about 451 million t of CO2 in 2010” (Boerner). The Haber process is helping everyone around the world by allowing farmers to use ammonia as a fertilizer, but this process is also causing humans to stuff, because the production of ammonia is leaving harmful amount of carbon dioxide in the environments.

In 1918 Haber was given the Noble Prize in chemistry, many felt that Haber shouldn’t had been awarded with this prize because some people said he was the father of chemical warfare. Haber also work as weapons developer and poison gases during World War I. Haber involvement in creating weapon led to thousands of deaths. His attitude toward the Allied troops was immoral. His invention of the Chlorine gas was a silent killer, on the war line nobody knew what it was until they inhale, by then it will be too late to escape these deadly weapons. His creation got worsen as the war continues.

In conclusion, Haber was a man of good and bad, he invented something the save millions lives. But he also invented something that kill thousands of people during World War I. apart for his involvement in warfare, I think he deserve the Noble Prize award. Without Ammonia the world would have dye from starvation. Haber invention is skill helping the world to populate by feeding millions of people.
