Evaluation Title: Emergency Room Visit
A young patient, 6 years old, arrives at the emergency department and has just fallen from their trampoline. They are being carried in by their parents because the patient cannot put any weight on their right leg. After being briefly assessed you read the following information from their chart:
- femur is intact
- synovial joint of patella is intact
- both bones of the shin are fractured in the diaphysis
- epiphyseal line is not damaged
- phalanges, metatarsals, and tarsals did not suffer any damage.
Instructions:
- Explain each of the observations above to your patient and their parents so that they understand what happened to the leg.
- Be specific and discuss all bones of the lower limb and if they should expect any growth issues with their bones.

Unit 3 Assessment – Nervous System Responses

Evaluation Title: Nervous System Responses
- You wake up suddenly in the middle of the night after hearing a loud bang. You have no idea what caused the noise but are instantly awake and highly alert. After a few moments you realize that the noise was from a car outside. You return to bed and realize that your heart is pounding, you are sweating, and that you are respiring (inhaling/exhaling) very rapidly. Explain what has just happened to your body.
- After resting in bed for another ten minutes, your heart rate returns to normal and you realize that you need to use the restroom. Explain what is now happening to your body in regards to your nervous system.
- The following day you return to class, well rested, only to be told that you have a pop quiz in your anatomy and physiology course. You instantly feel ‘stressed’.
Recall:
- Review the Autonomic Nervous System in the unit materials.
- Analyze events that may cause these systems to activate

- Read each of the three scenarios above.

- Discuss what is happening in relation to the nervous system and endocrine system in response to the stress.
- Identify the specific systems that are being activated in each scenario.

You have decided to take a vacation and head into the mountains. When you first began a vacation, you noticed that you had a difficult time catching your breath. Knowing that at higher altitudes there is a lower oxygen content you understand that your body is undergoing some physiological changes.
Recall:
- Review the relationships between the circulatory and pulmonary systems
- Identify the impact of differing oxygen levels in the circulatory system
- Review the terms ventilation rate, erythrocyte count, and oxygen carrying capacity

Pathogens infect the body activating the innate followed by the adaptive immune system. Vaccines perform a very similar function, but one does not become ill during the primary immune response (initiated by a vaccine).
Recall:

- Describe what happens during a primary followed by a secondary immune response when one becomes ill
- Compare that to when one is vaccinated

Unit 6 Assessment – Food Journal

Evaluation Title: Food Journal
It is important for us to understand that what we consume each day impacts the biochemical activity in our bodies. For this assignment, you are to keep a food journal and record all of the food and drink items that you consume over a 24-hour period.
Recall:
- Review the materials on chemical digestion
- Analyze the different macromolecule categories
- Identify specific locations where digestion takes place
- Review the major enzymes that facilitate this process
Instructions:
After you have recorded everything you had to eat and drink during this 24-hour period, explain how each item is digested. In your response, complete the following:
- You must identify the major macromolecules in each food/drink item.
- After you have identified the major macromolecules, you then need to list where the chemical digestion of those macromolecules occurs and
- Which enzymes are important for their proper digestion.
- You may submit this information in a table format is desired for better organization and presentation.

Unit 7 Assessment – Reproductive System

Evaluation Title: Reproductive System
In this unit we focused on the reproductive systems of both males and females. Both systems are highly regulated by the endocrine system and the gonadotropin hormones.
Recall:
- Review the hormonal regulation of the male reproductive system
- Review the hormonal regulation of the female reproductive system
- Identify specific hormones that have an impact on each of these reproductive systems
Instructions:
- For this assignment, you are to discuss the major hormones involved in both the male and female reproductive systems
- Select one hormone that impacts both reproductive systems
- Predict what would happen, in both systems, if this hormone was missing.
