Much emphasis within any definition and understanding of Business Continuity involves the entire complicated notion of “Recovery.” You are asked at this point in our discussions to present your thoughts about the status of an organization that has just managed to stop a major event that did serious damage to the enterprise. What do you think is going through the minds of the major players (say, owner, key department heads) before the recovery process occurs? Do not rely heavily on sources for this response; present your “gut opinion.” In your response to one or two others, indicate your agreement or disagreement with what they had presented. Then, present the reasons for your thoughts.
This week’s post is in fact very fitting with the times. Such is a sad reality that most of the businesses are going to endure in the weeks, months and years to come as a result of the mandatory governmental shutdown. As is it often referred in the emergency service arena, the road to recovery is long and painful and this could not be any more true for a business. I know for a fact that some of the business owners that I talk to are suffering not only emotionally because their businesses have suffered a great deal and it is their pride and joy but more importantly they are hurting monetarily. Before the recovery process begins, they must look at their numbers and see what needs to be changed because they will not return to normalcy right away. For example some gyms will not get the same number of patrons due to new guidelines and/or people electing to no longer attend such gym due to monetary concerns. In the event of restaurants, those restaurant who had a BC in place, they have seen an increase number of sales because they sold online and utilized third party delivery services.
After experiencing damages, different businesses tend to recover in different ways. These ways vary from one investment to another based on how each business was prepared to handle any undesirable instances in their operations. On one hand, I believe that for businesses with risk mitigation strategies, the recovery process will tend to be well-coordinated and, in most cases, successful. The recovery paths’ success stems from the fact that the mitigation strategies had clear guidelines on how various undesired eventualities in the organization would be handled. Also, most risk mitigation strategies tend to emphasis on putting aside sufficient funds to cater for any risks if they occur. Such finances, therefore, expedite the recovery process of most businesses. On the other hand, for businesses with no prior risk mitigation strategies, the recovery process will likely tend to be slow and, in some cases, unsuccessful. The difficulty in resuming normal operations is because such businesses had no plans in place on how their operations could be handled in the event of damages. Therefore, with no proper guidelines in place, business administrators may try out different strategies without considering their effectiveness. As a result, the recovery process becomes not only expensive but also timely. These factors cumulatively hinder successful recovery plans.
Recovery does not necessarily mean going back to the same state or existing condition that was before the event. Therefore, when I think of recovery after a major event, I prefer the definition of “the action or process of regaining possession or control of something stolen or lost” (Recovery: Definition of Recovery, n.d.).
In the scenario presented, the enterprise was still severely damaged even though the organization managed to stop the major event. Thus, I believe that the leaders of this business might experience a mix of thoughts and emotions. A certain level of relief while also concerned about its impact on the organization.
Human behavior is complex, and we know that in events of high stress, we may react differently. Still, I would think that an owner or department head will immediately do an informal or formal assessment of the business, including the facility conditions, any disruption to the operations, and personnel’s status. If they already had a plan for their business, they may have a clearer path to recovery. If they didn’t, probably it may take longer or be more challenging to start the process.
I find it interesting when people say, “during the recovery process, I learned…we did…, experienced, changed, wished”. Also, when some others start the conversation by saying, “for me to recover, I had to accept, modify, adapt, be creative, prioritize.” However, there might be a few who say, “I’m glad I had a plan; I knew exactly where to start.”
