Public relations has been impacted by technology and globalization.

Select one impact that changed public relations. What happened? What was involved? How did technology or globalization affect the outcome?

Respond to these next two statements separately.

1. Without a doubt one of the biggest changes to public relations has come through incredible use of mobile technology. In less than 15 years the smartphone has taken over the world and is at virtually everyone’s disposal. Combined with social media, it has allowed people to express their feelings towards a firm or product in real time. Before the prevalence of the smartphone people would have to use a computer to contact the outside world. But a smartphone will allow someone who feels like they need to contact a firm to be able to do so complete with pictures instantly. Some firms require entire teams to monitor online and social media interaction regarding their products and respond quickly.

For an example, I purchased a bottle of Tide from my supermarket, and placed it in the back of my car. When I got home I discovered it had been leaking from the bottom of the bottle and stained the carpet of my trunk, there was also about a cup of the liquid which had leaked out. I took to Twitter to let the company know what had happened. Within an hour they responded asking for different lot numbers located on different places on the bottle and offered several suggestions to help clean what had spilled. Once everything was cleaned and I was able to transfer the remaining product into the empty bottle I still had, they asked me to go to a website and enter a code they provided me. I did, and three weeks later a letter arrived from Tide apologizing for the problems which had happened and gave me a visa gift card for the trouble. All this communication and photographs was conducted through the use of my iPhone.

2. Hello Professor and class, technology is ever evolving and essentially makes our day to day lives simpler. Technology has changed PR in ways such as Executives getting a real-time look into the impact of PR without any time wasted by the PR team. Technology has changed the way we produce and consume information, so it makes sense that it has also changed the way that PR teams get their messages to the market and measure the results. Media monitoring software, analytics, workflow applications and the like help PR pros to process data faster, thereby improving their relationships with their customers. With All, PR will be able to access all of the benefits that data analysis can bring, including a better understanding of the digital world. Technology has allowed PR to work quickly in crisis situations and “clean up”any messes made by a brand or company, Or to work quickly with situations that involve statements surrounding the brand. Before companies would need to wait days or maybe even weeks to release statements, with technology this is now able to happen within hours maybe even minutes
