Paragraph Example:

There is one basic ethical expectation for STC. According to the As technical communicators, we observe the following ethical principles in our professional activities web page published on the STC website, “We seek to promote the public good in our activities.” _____ I believe this source is trustworthy because its purpose is to communicate the standards for all professional communicators like me, even though it hasn’t been updated in 22 years. I really like this sentence and have used it in important discussions to justify that human rights is an important part of technical communication. However, when I look at the expectation for ethical behavior, I have some problems with it. First, the verb ‘seek’ means to look for or try and this is hard to tell if someone is actually doing the thing they are supposed to be trying. We can see only if they actually do it or not. In other words, seeking feels more like motive more than action. Second, ‘to promote’ basically means getting excited about, not necessarily doing the thing. So this expectation is way too low. Trying to be excited about helping people is not at all the same as actually helping people through doing good technical communication work.
