What’s Different between the Colonial Regions

Assignment 1:

The English colonies had many similarities. All of them looked to the King of England as their overlord and all of them were an integral part of the British Empire. All the colonies embraced slavery, but did so to differing degrees. Indeed, when looking at the English colonies it is easy to see the similarities between them. But the different regions and the different colonies also had significant differences that kept them from uniting as one before the Revolution.

Assignment 2:

This is a small group discussion. You will be keeping the same small group that you had in module one.

In this discussion, we will be taking a close look at the interactions between English colonists and the Powhattan people during the first years of the Jamestown colony. The two groups had different values and ways of interacting with the natural world. Women were accorded more status by the Native Americans than by the English. Farming crops, farm animals, and farming techniques differed. Concepts of landownership differed. Religious ideas differed. In addition, most of the early English settlers were not experienced as farmers and had no clue what would and would not grow in the Chesapeake. In this particular discussion, I am asking that you imagine that you were one of the Powhattan who first encounters the English in 1609.

So imagine that the year is 1609. You are a member of the Powhatan in the Chesapeake region of what would become Virginia. Three years ago, a ship full of strangers came and settled on land traditionally used by your people. These strangers looked strange with their varied color of hair and their white skins. Most of the strangers were men. There were very few women in the community. They also brought strange animals with them. The most annoying of these creatures was about the size of a large dog and seemed able to root up with its snout just about any plant that it attacked. Their hogs and pigs as they were called by the strangers had destroyed fields of corn and reduced the amount of food the Powhatan would have for the winter. While the animals they call horses look useful for traveil, one of their other creatures, “a goat” had eaten your friends winter deerskin tunic.

The animals were not the only problem that you have with the strangers. Their farming techniques broke up the land into pieces. Sometimes, this had meant that the strangers had dug up some of the Powhatan fields of corn maize and squash to plant their own crops. But these strangers did not understand the land or the seasons and their crops did not grow well.

For the last three years, the strangers had come looking to trade for food during the winter months. But poor harvest made it difficult for the people to give up anything that they had to the strangers. Now, they have come again. They are willing to offer some beads and textiles for the food. But you want the steel knives, metal pots, and guns that the strangers have. Those things seem to be the best items that the strangers have to trade.

Some among the Powhatan want to help the strangers. Others want to drive the strangers away or kill them. Others simply wanted to leave them alone.

  1. Review Founding of Jamestown.
  2. Read the following primary source: Jamestown paragraph.docx This is a speech by the chief of the Powhattan. Hint: This source was written before English spelling was standardized, so if you run into a strange looking word, sound it out and you should be able to recognize what it is. They also sometimes add extra letters or leave off letters to words. Sounding out the word will help you.
  3. Use what you learn about Jamestown and the speech by the chief of the Powhattan to help you decide what you would recommend if you were a Powhattan: Help, drive away/kill or leave the English alone.

Lastly for the second assignment I have attached a document with 2 peoples discussion responses I need to reply to. Please provide a short reply for these as well.
