Human 101 Cultural Events Guidelines Fall 2020
For this assignment you will need to choose either a visual arts event OR a performing arts event to attend virtually. While virtually attending this event, answer the questions from the appropriate chapter(s) in the book Beginner’s Guide to the Humanities. If you have chosen to do a visual arts event you will need to select ONE piece of artwork to focus on for your paper though you should also include an overview of your virtual trip through the museum and what it was like. If you have chosen to do a performing arts event, you may need to select ONE piece of work to evaluate if your performance consisted of several pieces. An example of this would be if you saw a musical performance where six musicians played different works. You would need to choose one of them to focus on; however, if you watch a play that is one work in its entirety.
For the performing arts, you may virtually attend any professionally produced performance that falls within the guidelines of the course and is intended for an adult audience. What does not work are popular music performances, standup comedy, speech night, etc. If you are wanting to go to a performing arts event and you are not sure if it will work for this assignment, please check with me first.
The actual content of your essay needs to contain three major categories: description, analysis, response. For the description portion you will need to describe the work you have chosen using the appropriate vocabulary terms from class. It needs to be an educated description that shows you are a humanities student. For the analysis portion you will need to critically analyze the ONE piece that you have selected. This analysis will be different for everyone, because you will be selecting different pieces to evaluate. This is the part of the paper where you look at the technical elements of the work you selected and analyze its meaning, significance, historical context, etc. The response section is where you will include your Apollonian and Dionysian responses. Look at not only how the work affects the viewer, but why you think it has that impact. Use Bishop’s A Beginner’s Guide to the Humanities to effectively complete this assignment. This text has a chapter for each type of event that you may attend with guiding questions. If you answer all of the questions/fill in the prompts about your event, you will end up with an outline for the content of your essay. Due to the restrictions on library loans with COVID-19, I will be providing the class with the three most commonly used chapters. If you end up needing a different chapter, please let me know and we will work together with the library to see what we can do.
Your paper should be written in essay form, meaning you should have an introduction, body paragraphs, and a conclusion. Your papers should have one inch margins, a standard 12-point font, have numbered pages and be double-spaced. Your paper should have two to three pages of text, not counting bibliography. Either Chicago Style or MLA is an acceptable citation style for this paper. If you choose Chicago Style you will need footnotes in the body of your essay and a bibliography at the end that lists your sources. If you choose MLA you will need in-text parenthetical citations and a works cited page at the end of your paper that lists your sources. You absolutely must cite your sources! If you do not cite your sources it is plagiarism, which results in a zero on the assignment.
You may cite outside sources for the paper. You may use any scholarly source that is appropriate for the work you have chosen to evaluate. This source can be a book, an article, or a website, but it must be scholarly. For websites, this means it is best if it is a .edu cite. Websites ending in .com are not appropriate for this assignment. Wikipedia is NOT an acceptable source.
