Tutorial Activity: Eyewitness Identification

The video below presents the story of Jennifer Thomson, a 22 year old University student. In 1984 her home was broken into and she was raped by a man. The video presents the events that occurred after the rape and the situation which led to the arrest of an innocent man (Ronald Cotton), his trial and his conviction.

Consider the reflective questions below while watching part 1. Then watch part 2 and compare what you have come up with to what is discussed in this video.

3. What factors may affect a jury in this case?
4. What role can forensic psychologists play in shaping police practice and jury decision making?
5. What could have been done differently to prevent Ronald Cotton from being convicted?
6. If someone can be wrongly convicted in a rape case (where the victim can see the rapist for a prolonged period of time) what does it say for those cases such as burglary or assault where the victim may only see the offender for a few seconds?
