As a reminder, the goal of this assignment is to provide you with a cognitive exercise that will allow you to recollect, summarize, reorganize, and restructure the materials for this week in a way this is the most beneficial for you and your style of learning.
Paper vs. Computer
First, you need to determine whether you will take notes by hand or by computer. One thing to note is that this can change. In other words, just because you typed notes last week does not mean that you cannot hand-write notes this week (or for each of the different readings/lectures). Do that works best for you.
Taking notes by hand seems to have a bigger, positive impact on student learning. This is mainly because (1) taking notes by computer/typing may allow you to become easily distracted, and (2) taking notes by hand is slower, so you have to be much more intentional and selective in your writing. Research has also shown that actively hand writing creates more pathways and stimulates brain function in ways that computer typing does not. On the flip side to this, computer typing is obviously faster and allows for you to make changes (such as reformatting) much more easily. Again, ultimately the choice is yours and what you feel would benefit you the most.
Side note – there are programs available on tablets and other devices (such as Rocketbook) that allow you to take hand written notes via stylus or Apple pencil and save them digitally. You are welcome to use any of these programs as well.
Note Taking Styles
Second, I want to you use and/or create your own style of note taking – one that is most beneficial to how you study, review, and learn new material. Your goal is NOT I repeat, NOT to copy or write down everything you see or read in the readings/lectures. Instead, your goal is to take that information, and organize and summarize it in a way that will help you. See the grade rubric below for further details.
If you have any questions or want additional resources on specific note taking styles, please do not hesitate to contact me.
For this Assignment
Once you’ve determined your note taking style and whether you will hand write your notes or type them, the next step is to read/view the chapter and take notes. For this assignment, you are taking notes on Chapter/Lecture 8: Tectonics & Volcanic Processes.
Actions
Your notes should be a minimum of 3, full pages to earn full credit.
When you are ready to submit your notes, click on the “Submit Assignment” button. If you have typed them, you can submit them by (1) copying and pasting them into the text box, or (2) submit them as a file (such as a Word document or PDF). Please do not submit other files types, such as Pages, since these cannot always be read on my end. If you have written your notes by hand, you can submit them by scanning them and uploading the file (PDF or JPEG are the preferred file types in this case). Canvas does not recognize TIFF images files, so make sure your file is in PDF or JPEG. If you don’t have access to a scanner, there are plenty of free apps that you can download on a smartphone or tablet. These will take pictures and convert the documents automatically into PDF format. If you need assistance with this, please do not hesitate to ask.
Your notes must be submitted in Canvas by 11:59PM on Friday, November 13th
