Description:
A major challenge in young adulthood is balancing the many new roles that come along with this life transition. Within just a few short years of reaching adult age, many individuals will move out of the parent'(s) or caregiver'(s) home, may get married, or form a serious relationship with another person, and will move into a job or career path. Each of these roles will bring with it major responsibilities and expectations. Some of these expectations, of course, are going to conflict. Forming a successful marriage, for example, requires serious time and effort. At the same time, the individual’s career may require a great deal of time. The young adult must negotiate successful compromises between these role demands if he or she is going to be successful on the job and at home.
Assignment:
Identify at least three role transitions that you have negotiated as you entered into adulthood, and transitioned out of adolescence. Describe the developmental changes related to these transitions, applying key terminology and relevant theories from your text. Consider the following questions when reflecting:
- What expectations did you have for becoming adult? Were there new roles or responsibilities you expected to take on?
- What were expectations held by others that changed during your transition?
- What were some of the struggles you experienced?
- How did you cope with these transitions?
- What were some of the biggest challenges for you as you prepared for adulthood?
- What supports did you have to help with the transition? What role did your parents play? How did peers influence your transition? Other influences?
- Did you experience a shift in your social relationships?
