Purpose and Background:

Infographics are a wonderful way to display information. They are graphic visual representations of information, data, or knowledge intended to present information quickly and clearly. Research suggests that infographics can improve cognition by utilizing graphics to enhance the human visual system’s ability to see patterns and trends. For this assignment you will choose a topic and create a visual representation of the information using a free web tool known as Canva.

Instructions:

Choose one of these prompts and create an infographic using Canva.

Prompt #1

Research the use of literary devices in Walt Whitman’s poem “I Hear America Singing.” Create an infographic illustrating some of these devises showing how they contribute to the meaning of the poem.

Prompt #2

Dickinson breaks free from the oppression of preconceived notions by employing various rhetorical devices to emphasize that one should think and choose for herself. Create an infographic illustrating some of these devices and showing how they contribute to the meaning of the poem.

Prompt #3

In Langton Hughes’ poem “ I, Too” consider effect the domestic imagery (the house, the kitchen, the eating, the table) have on the themes of this piece as a whole? Create an infographic showing how these images contribute to the meaning of the poem.

Prompt #4

Adrienne Rich’s poem “Diving into the Wreck” is about the journey of a person searching for his or her true identity. Rich uses multi-meaning metaphors to bring out her message. Create an infographic illustrating some of the metaphors that Rich uses to show the search for identity.

Prompt #5

“We Real Cool” is a poem about the identity of a group of teenagers, black males, playing pool in the Golden Shovel. They are said to be black, like the poet Gwendolyn Brooks, but the poem could be about any group of rebellious youngsters anywhere, be they white or female. Create an infographic illustrating three themes found in this poem.


Requirements:

  • Infographic must have a short introduction and thesis. You should introduce the poem and the author and give a one or two sentence summary of what the poem is about. End this textblock with your thesis statement. Include a photo of the author.
  • Remember that the inforgraphic is visual so summarize the text as much as possible while still explaining the concepts.
  • Don’t try to cover too much. If you are writing about images, symbols, etc, try to limit to 3 or 4 elements.
  • You should have at least four graphics to help illustrate the points you are making.
  • Make sure the final product is easy to read. Pay attention to the colors you use. Don’t use a light color with a light background.
  • Include your references in MLA format at the end.
  • Save as a PDF and submit to Canvas.
