Enter your data into an Excel spreadsheet
“Create” columns for your two constructs and each of your demographic questions
For participant/ survey #1 enter the mean value for your two constructs and demographic info into row one of the excel file
Continue entering your survey data for each survey making sure the participant # lines up with the row # in excel (e.g., the 5th participant/ survey should be on row 5 of excel).
Calculate Correlation
In the cell below the last row enter the formula =CORREL(
Then select the first cell of your first construct and drag down to highlight all the cells of that construct
Hit , (comma)
Then select the first cell of the second construct and drag down to highlight all the cells of that construct
Hit ENTER
Calculate the p-value: convert r into t
=([correlation coefficient]*SQRT([number of pairs of data]-2)/SQRT(1-[correlation coefficient]^2))
In the cell below the correlation value you calculated (above) enter the following: =(
Then select the cell with your calculated correlation value
Then type: *SQRT(
Enter the degrees of freedom (the number of rows -2)
Then type: )/SQRT(1-
Select the cell with your calculated correlation value again
Then type: ^2))
Hit ENTER
If this value is negative:enter the same value into the cell below but remove the ‘-‘ negative sign
Calculate the p-value:
In the cell below the one you just calculated (converted r into t, the cell with the positive value) enter the following: =TDIST(
Then select the cell that you just calculated
Type: , then enter the degrees of freedom again (rows -2)
Type: ,2)Then hit ENTER
This is your p-value. If your p-value is less than .05 then you found a statistically significant correlation!
Producing a Scatterplot
Find an empty space next to your data and click on an empty cell
Select the “Insert” menu item, find the scatterplot chart and select it
A new menu will appear, click on “Select Data”
Click on the top left cell of your first construct and drag down to the bottom right cell of your second construct – highlighting all of your data (but not the construct headers/labels/titles)
In the menu click “Add Chart Element” and add the “axis titles” to your scatterplot
Click each to rename the y-axis and x-axis to the appropriate construct name
Calculating Means
Select an empty cell and type: =AVERAGE(
Select the first cell of the variable and drag down to the last cell
Hit ENTER
Calculating Standard Deviations
Select an empty cell and type: =STDEV.S(
Select the first cell of the variable and drag down to the last cell
Hit ENTER
Calculating Proportions
Count the number of times that a value occurs (e.g., Full-time occurs twice)
Select and empty cell and type: =
Then type the value you just counted (e.g., 2)
Then type: /
Then type the total number of participants/ cells for that variable (e.g., 4)
Hit ENTER
