Climate Change: Humanity’s Next Battle
Kann, D. (2020, January 17). More Americans are alarmed by global warming than ever before, survey reveals. Retrieved October 26, 2020, from https://www.cnn.com/2020/01/17/us/survey-shows-more-americans-alarmed-by-global-warming/index.html
This article is about how American’s are becoming more aware of the impacts of global warming.”The findings show that as the global climate changes rapidly, a growing proportion of Americans view the climate crisis as an actual crisis” (Kann, 2020). This quote from the article helps show that people are finally starting to understand the drastic impacts that we are having on the environment. Kann stating“actual crisis” helps show that for a long time, and even still currently, people have not taken the issue of climate change as seriously as they should. This information would be useful for my paper because it can be strong evidence that climate change is having a major impact on the environment, as people are changing their opinions on the issue based on the changes they have seen from the climate change and natural disasters in recent years. This material would appear in one of my body paragraph’s as evidence to support the fact that climate change is not only real, but happening at a rate exponentially faster than people realize.
Groppe, E. (2011, December 12). Climate Change: A Life Issue. Retrieved October 26, 2020, from https://www.americamagazine.org/issue/800/100/climate-change-life-issue
This article emphasizes the significance of global warming and its impact on the planet. It gives examples of how the Earth is already being drastically effected by humans, and that change is necessary sooner rather than later to prevent it from continuing to get worse. The article talks about numerous different ways of how global warming will destroy our planet, ranging anywhere from rising sea levels, destroyed agricultural land, and rising global temperatures. “In the short term, climate change will bring an increase in extreme weather events that threaten human populations and agricultural production. In the long term, the very viability of human civilization is at stake” (Groppe, 2011). This statement from the article helps show how significant climate change is, and how quickly it is destroying our environment. The idea that the short term effects of global warming are millions of people’s homes and lives being at risk would bring major attention to the issue, especially given people’s tendency to brush off things that are not of any threat to us in the near future. I would use this information in my paper to get reader’s attention by including this quote about the major and devasting impacts global warming is having on our planet currently, not just what will happen if we continue to ignore it. This would be a key point in one of my body paragraph’s in order to convince the reader that change is needed now, not later.
Wheeler, T., & Braun, J. (2013, August 02). Climate Change Impacts on Global Food Security. Retrieved October 27, 2020, from https://science.sciencemag.org/content/341/6145/508.abstract
This scholarly article focuses on the agricultural and food supply impacts global warming could soon have on our population. “The stability of whole food systems may be at risk under climate change because of short-term variability in supply” (Wheeler & Braun, 2013). This quote from the article helps emphasize that effects of climate change could change supplies of food across the globe, impacting billions of people in the world. I would use the information from this article to help educate people about the agricultural impact that climate change will have on our planet if action is not taken to change how we are treating our planet. I would use this as a rebuttal to the argument that climate change is not a threat because we have not had any stress on our food supplies. This article would help debunk that claim and educate people on how climate change will continue to destroy agricultural land and thus food supply in the near future.
Kundzewicz, Z., Krysanova, V., Benestad, R., Hov, Ø, Piniewski, M., & Otto, I. (2017, October 21). Uncertainty in climate change impacts on water resources. Retrieved October27, 2020, from https://www.sciencedirect.com/science/article/pii/S146290111730638X?casa_token=jNBQIKVWpVUAAAAA%3A8HM35rU755913ghV11tAoMdZZbY-EmdsMGMeF78_1Lk6NEOPCOGSmVnsYzsWq0vWmqhsNR2PoQ
This scholarly article gives information about the effects climate change will have on the world’s water supply. The article focuses on the uncertainty of this issue based on the facts and evidence they use in the research content. “Climate change is likely to increase the frequency of meteorological droughts (less rainfall) and agricultural droughts (less soil moisture) in presently dry regions by the end of the 21st century…” (Kundzewiczet al. 2017). This is a quote used by the researchers to tell the readers about the possibility of climate change to cause less rainfall and less soil moisture, therefore making agricultural lands unable to produce food. This research article would actually be a possible counter to the fact that global warming is an issue, because the researchers are simply giving examples of different ways, if at all, climate change could affect the water supply. I would use this information in my paper to set up a rebuttal to this information, by using evidence from other articles to show evidence that climate change is already currently having an impact on the weather and rainfall.
Hobbie, S. E., & Grimm, N. B. (2020, January 27). Nature-based approaches to managing climate change impacts in cities. Retrieved October 28, 2020, from https://royalsocietypublishing.org/doi/abs/10.1098/rstb.2019.0124
This scholarly article focuses on the impact’s climate change will have on urban populations, specifically because urban populations will be hit the hardest in general from climate change because of urban heat effects and flooding. “Concentration of human settlements along rivers and coastal zones increases exposure of people and infrastructure to climate change hazards, often disproportionately affecting those who are least prepared” (Hobbie & Grimm, 2020). This quote helps readers understand why urban areas will in general be hit the hardest, as compared to rural populations.I would use this information in my paper to show readers that no matter where you are, you will still see the effects of global warming. It will not miss great cities like New York, it will actually hit them harder than the average location. This information would be used in one of my body paragraphs to help readers understand that we are all in this fight together against global warming, and that nobody is immune to its effects.
Knapp, A., Carroll, C., Griffin‐Nolan, R., Slette, I., Chaves, F., Baur, L., . . . Smith, M. (2018, September 04). A reality check for climate change experiments: Do they reflect the real world? Retrieved October 28, 2020, from https://esajournals.onlinelibrary.wiley.com/doi/full/10.1002/ecy.2474
This scholarly article gives information on most research data about climate change, and that the majority of the studies used as evidence of climate change are not conducted in a natural manor. The article suggests that results are skewed to increase the changes that would otherwise not be as impactful as they would suggest. “However, results from experiments often are inconsistent with observations made under natural conditions, suggesting the need for rigorous comparisons of experimental and observational studies” (Knapp et al., 2018). This quote suggests what I stated earlier, and that research needs to be conducted in a more natural manor to get a real understanding of climate issues. I would use this information as an example of people who suggest that climate change is a hoax because the evidence is not legitimate. I would use this information in one of my rebuttal/ counter argument paragraphs, and prove this information wrong by providing countless different studies that were conducted in natural ways that still showed climate change is a major issue and there is proof to back it up.
George, M., Bruzzese, J., & Matura, L. (2017, August 14). Climate Change Effects on Respiratory Health: Implications for Nursing. Retrieved October 29, 2020, from https://sigmapubs.onlinelibrary.wiley.com/doi/full/10.1111/jnu.12330
This scholarly article focuses on the impacts climate change will have on children andadults with respiratory issues. “Climate change is expected to drive more extreme weather events, which have the potential to increase respiratory‐related morbidity and mortality” (George et al., 2017). This quote states that the increase of extreme weather events is increasing respiratory problems. This information would be used to show the audience that not only is global warming indirectly having an effect on the population, but it is now directly impacting our health. I would use this information to rebuttal claims from climate change opponents that argue it does not affect human’s directly, and therefore should not be a major issue currently.
Fountain, H. (2019, December 04). Climate Change Is Accelerating, Bringing World ‘Dangerously Close’ to Irreversible Change. Retrieved October 29, 2020, from https://www.nytimes.com/2019/12/04/climate/climate-change-acceleration.html
This article gives information about climate change’s acceleration in recent years, and that irreversible damage will soon occur if action is not taken. “Seas are warming and rising faster, putting more cities at risk of tidal flooding or worse. Glaciers are melting at a pace many researchers did not expect for decades” (Fountain, 2019). This quote helps emphasize just how quickly climate change is occurring, and helps to get readers attention who may just be scrolling through. This information could be used in my essay to help make people realize just how great the stakes are, and that devasting impacts could be felt not just in future generations, but in our lifetime. I would use this information to refute the argument that climate change is happening at a rate so minimal it is not something we need to worry about at this time.
Still the greatest hoax. (2019, April 19). Retrieved October 30, 2020, from https://www.carolinacoastonline.com/news_times/opinions/editorials/article_1467fd5c-62aa-11e9-b442-93433ffa1e9a.html
This article refutes the notion that climate change is real, referring to the fact that climate change experts changed the name from global warming to climate change because they could then say any bad weather change was caused by climate change. “Referenced today in letters to the editor, the hoax is mankind is responsible for global warming. That is false. The sun determines our naturally occurring climate cycles” (Still the greatest hoax, 2019). I would use the information in this article to rebuttal the notion that climate change is a hoax. I would put this in one of my body paragraphs, and explain that the reason the name was changed from global warming to climate change is because the effects that humans are having on the environment is not only limited to the increase in temperature, but also the massive increase of natural disasters and destroyed weather patterns as proven by science and research countless times.
Huberman, B. (2019, September 20). Climate Change Denial: Debunked. Retrieved October 30, 2020, from https://www.snopes.com/collections/climate-change-denial-debunked/
This article gives evidence about why climate change opponents and denials are wrong. “Despite persistent and ominous predictions from scientists and advocates, equally persistent sources continue to circulate misinformation and cast doubt on what is a widely accepted truth among thousands of scientists: Climate change is real and it’s caused by humans” (Huberman, 2019). This quote not only states that climate change is real, debunking the notion that it is a hoax, but also states how experts and scientists have shown it is real, while the quote also states that deniers use misinformation to try and state their case. I would use this information in my research paper in the introduction to explicitly state that anyone who opposes the clear evidence of climate change is spreading misinformation and needs to look at the information for themselves before spreading false facts.
