Description
The American Civil Rights Movement has become iconic and in hindsight often seems to be an inevitable progression. The retelling of this history often centers on bravery of nonviolent activists. However, it was not a given at the time and there were voices advocating for the use of violence. For this week’s exercise I want you to reflect on violence. What is the advantage of nonviolence? Is there a point where violence is legitimate? What happens when violence is used in activism? I highly recommend you watch Kimberly Latrice Jones’ impassioned defense of violence “How We Can Win” https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=llci8MVh8J4 Also transcript here https://www.rev.com/blog/transcripts/kimberly-latrice-jones-blm-video-speech-transcript
