Assignment: Your task is to provide a six to eight 6-8 page problem/solution
argumentation essay on a topic of your choice, engaging at least four (4)
peer-reviewed journal articles from EBSCO.
For the topic, you might explore an issue or problem in your major field or in a major that
you are considering, or a problem on campus, on the job, at your church, or with your
sports team. An important caveat in choosing the topic is that it must lend itself to
scholarly research—you will be using peer-reviewed journal articles from EBSCO.
Also, select a topic that you know something about, so you will not have to lean too
heavily on sources. Remember that your body paragraphs should be comprised of your
own ideas/writing, with direct quotes used as support.
Four topics to avoid: abortion, gay marriage, gender issues, anything about marijuana.
Be sure to fully describe your topic!
Thesis Statement:
Sample thesis: Although many students find writing research papers challenging,
the most effective way to overcome this problem is to practice,
because only through experience and repetition can students build
the necessary skills and confidence.

Sources:
A minimum of four (4) peer-reviewed journal articles are required for this paper, but no more than six (6) total sources, excluding the Bible.
All of the sources for this essay must be peer-reviewed journal articles from the library’s databases.
Direct quotes from these sources must be incorporated in proper MLA format with introductory sentences or signal phrases, page numbers, and explications.
Remember that each secondary source must also appear on your Works Cited page. Your Works Cited entries will be carefully graded (since using proper documentation is a primary objective of this course).
Examine the sources used in your paper from the context of your own argument about the problem/solution, comparing and contrasting what you assert with what the sources suggest.
________________________________________________________________________
Organization:
—formal, original title (use language from your thesis).
–introductory paragraph—most of the first page (considering the space taken by your
heading and title).
–well-composed thesis that presents an argument and why.
–enough body paragraphs to ensure that you can fill a minimum of SIX FULL pages.
Remember you can construct paragraphs to describe your topic, define terms,
compare/contrast, present a process, provide an example, etc.
–a persuasive conclusion—one-third to one-half page that calls for action or forecasts
future implications and/or outcomes. The conclusion is important for a problem/solution essay—be sure to explain who needs to address the problem and how they should go about it.
