Picture Books

Write a discussion post in which you do these three things:

  1. Analyze and respond to the plot of Peter Rabbit. In what ways would it appeal to young children?
  2. Choose a page opening (in the online version, 1 image + the text to the right) of Peter Rabbit or Strega Nona, and analyze it using the concepts from Russell’s chapter (linked on the introduction page). I want you to be specific – use his vocabulary and reference specific details from his chapter and from the pages you choose. Try to choose pages that someone else hasn’t talked about already! I’m interested in your original ideas here.
  3. Ask a question about one of the readings. Your question can be about a theme or idea that you want to discuss, or about a term from Russell that you want to know more about.

Finally, write a reply to one of your classmates’ posts where you answer their question in a detailed way

Assignment 2

While Strega Nona isn’t a traditional story, it feels like one. How does Tomie de Paola make it feel like a folktale or fairy tale? Are there folkloric motifs you recognize?

Please watch the YouTube video of Ezra Jack Keats’ book The Snowy Day. What are some of the design choices that Keats makes (color, amount of text per opening, illustration style, etc.)? What is the effect of these choices – what’s the overall impression of the book?

Compare Strega Nona  and The Snowy Day. What ages are they written for? What makes each of them appealing in their own way?

Assignment 3

Picture Book Activity

This assignment is your chance to design your own picture book, applying the concepts you’ve read about and seen in published picture books. Don’t worry about making your book look professional; I’m most interested in seeing evidence of your thoughtful planning and care in putting it together. It should be 6-12 pages long. I’m giving a wide range here because everyone’s narrative style and pagination will be different.

Make sure to include a title page! Post your book here, and look at your classmates’ books. Please comment on at least one other book, using specifics.

You can do this project individually or with a partner. If you work with a partner, decide on the basic story and outline together. Then split up the work: one of you writes the text and the other draws the illustrations. Put them together, and make any changes you need to. (Google Jamboard might be a good way to get started, because it lets you doodle and paste images on a shared whiteboard, as well as type words.)

Illustrations should be original – no clip art or copied images, please. You can draw, collage, paint, or use your own photos. Your images can be realistic and representational, or they can be more impressionistic, or more abstract. And you don’t have to illustrate everything in the story.

Your finished book should be a single file: .pdf, Google Slides or PowerPoint, Prezi, or Word.
