From 1901 to 2018, 180 individuals were awarded the Nobel Prize in Chemistry, five of whom were women.  There were 209 recipients of the Nobel Prize in Physics, three of whom werewomen.  There were 216 recipients of the Nobel Prize in Physiology or Medicine, twelve of whom were women.  Interestingly, Marie Curie accounts for two of the eight awards in chemistry and physics, as she was awarded the Nobel Prize for Physics in 1903 and Chemistry in 1911, and her daughter, Irene Joliot-Curie, was a recipient for Chemistry in 1935 (“Nobel,” n.d.).  In 2020 two more women were added to the list when it was announced that Jennifer Doudna and Emmanuelle Charpentier were being awarded the Nobel Prize in Chemistry for their work on the gene-editing tool, CRISPR/Cas9.

Content

Your writing assignment will consist of two parts:

  1. Select a recipient of the Nobel Prize in Chemistry, Physics, or Physiology or Medicine who would also be considered a minority.  Share biographical information about the scientist, including how they became interested in science, an overview of their scientific career, obstacles they had to overcome, and give a summary of the research for which they were awarded the Nobel Prize.  Your discussion should be a minimum of one page.

  1. For part two of the assignment, select a scientist from the Hanna H. Gray Fellow Program who is carrying out research that you find interesting.

Hanna H. Gray Fellow Program

Find a peer-reviewed research article from a scholarly journal that they have published.  The PLOS and ProQuest databases either indicate whether articles are peer-reviewed, or allow you to include peer-reviewed as a search term. Study the article and answer the following questions in your own words:

❖ What research question are the authors attempting to answer?

❖ Why is the research significant?

❖ What data did the authors collect?

❖ What is the authors interpretation of the data?

Your discussion for part 2 of this assignment should be a minimum of one page.

Reading and interpreting a scientific article is not easy and takes a lot of practice.  The following video will help you to learn how to navigate the different parts of a scientific article:
