3.John Locke said our natural rights are Life, Liberty, and Property. For the Declaration of Independence, Thomas Jefferson turned “property” into “the pursuit of happiness”. Why did one of the founders of America equate “property” with “the pursuit of happiness”? Would you agree with this equation?

While you think about that, be considering this fundamental philosophical question that determines much of how you judge others and live your life: Are your rights, “natural rights”? Are there “unalienable rights”? (Nowadays we use the term “inalienable”). This means rights that can not be taken away from you (which is why you feel affronted when you see someone’s rights not be respected–from Aimee Stevens to George Floyd.) Or, are our rights only given to us by our governments in order to make a more satisfied citizenry? Because, let’s face it, if someone does something wrong we decide that it is in the best interest of the community to take away those rights. We kill you, put you into jail, or take away your money or property. And there ain’t no right to life among the animals around us.

Does property equal happiness? And is your right to either, a natural right or a civil right granted by authorities?
