What Discourse Community will you explore, and how would you categorize the community connection (residential, social, hobby, academic, professional, social justice . . . )?
What are the explicitly shared goals, values, or interests of the DC, and how does one become accepted as a member of this DC?
What digital or print resources did you locate?.
Where does the group’s primary communication occur, and how is intercommunication within the membership facilitated?
Where (physical or digital) do members of the DC frequent or inhabit, how do members communicate and participate, How often do they interact, and which technologies do they employ?
Who is allowed to speak and participate, and who is not allowed or encouraged (within the group)?
Who are the important people, prominent voices, or authority figures in this DC, and how is their authority or expertise established in this community?
What genres do they use their preferred methods to communicate with, and how has this DC shaped these genres to their specific goals and purposes?
What are the main intentions of the communication, and what is communicated?
List two specific examples of a lexis—a specialized language, jargon, or shorthand—you identified in the written communication of the discourse community?
How are visual communications included?
What are the unspoken rules or expectations of the DC?
Swales suggests that a University creates a constellation of discourse communities. Which other discourse communities are connected to your discourse community and how?
write a detailed outline–this means full sentences rather than just a word for each part. Remember that you’ll use a format like the following (that can be adapted as you see fit).

Remember that you want to include direct evidence from your discourse community so make sure you are keeping careful track of where you’re pulling information from so you don’t get confused later. You’ll also need one scholarly source, so start thinking about where a good place to include that in your essay would be.

To explore how a group communicates through writing, the group’s written communications should also be included as a direct source. As such, you will be expected to include source material from the communications of your discourse community of choice. We will read other material that can be included, and you can use any outside source that serves the purpose of informing your audience by sharing how the group uses writing to communicate. Any and all sources addressed in the Expository Overview must be cited in accordance with MLA formatting expectations.
