Posts should be at least two fully developed paragraphs and should thoughtfully reflect on, critique, or expand upon the post that you are responding to. Remember that “You did a good job!” posts will not receive any credit. The goal is to get a dialogue going with your classmates. You may respond to any posts in the thread, but avoid responding directly to the original topic if several students have already done so. If you see an engaging discussion that has started, feel free to join in and add your input.

I found it compelling this week to address the use of a placebo in a study. A placebo is “an inactive substance” that “has no effect” on the intended trial or opposing treatment regimen being tested (Massachusetts General Hospital, 2020, par. 2). I am sure most of us have heard and possibly have experience the placebo effect before. We oftentimes think that a certain object or food is having an altering effect on us when, undoubtedly, there was an alternative cause for this effect on us. An example of a placebo effect is telling your child, for instance, that vegetables make them strong and they must eat them all to grow big muscles after the meal. Once the child eats their vegetables, they instantaneously flex their arms and insist that they are so incredibly strong. This is just how placebo effects work.
When filling out this week’s TOE template, we saw the use of a placebo in one of the studies and I found it not only compelling but strengthening in this study’s analysis and depth to which the study went in order to imply the effects of gum chewing in post-op care. In the article Does gum chewing ameliorate post operative Ileus? Results of a prospective, randomized, placebo-controlled trial, the “placebo” used was an “accupressure wrist bracelet” (Matros et al., 2002, pg. 774). Patients were unaware of whether the gum chewing was the treatment regimen or whether it was the gum. I found the use of the placebo effect to be such a strong-suit in strategy. When patients are aware of the study and it’s implication, I find the knowledge of the study to be a design flaw. Often times, humans will interpret outcomes based upon what they imagine the outcome is supposed to be. So, to implement a placebo is a compelling addition to a study.
