Opportunity to enhance services

Since the start of the Covid-19 pandemic my health care organization has suffered a significant financial loss. One opportunity

for enhanced services with my health care organization is to reduce expenses by decreasing the use of nonproductive and overtime

hours while maintaining quality care. System thinking should be used to address this financial loss. “System thinking is not simply

moving the focus from the individual patient to the unit, organization, or even the institution.” (Marshall & Broome, 2017, p. 45) An

opportunity for my health care organization is to reduce expenses by increasing productivity of health care providers.

Possible Solution

A possible solution to expense reduction is to increase productivity and decrease the hours of non-productivity and overtime

usage. Using system thinking the nursing leaders must see the big picture. “It requires an ability to begin with the big picture and

to live in the world of an entire system. (Marshall & Broome, 2017, p. 45) Reducing the number of nonproductive hours can have a

high cost to health care organizations. “Nonproductive hours are measured and monitored because of their high cost.” (Economics

of Health Care, 2018, p. 97) The decrease in overtime hours will also add to the cost savings. “Overtime hours are costly; they are

typically 50% more than the base wage and maybe up to double the base wage. “(Economics of Health Care, 2018, p. 97) Expense

reduction is very critical to the organization at this time.

Financial Impacts

The financial impact the organization will be an increase in revenue. “Nurses can also affect revenue related to nurse

productivity and patient flow. Efficient and productive inpatient nursing care can reduce excessive patient LOS that may increase

costs to the facility and make beds unavailable to patients needing admission.” (“Economics of Health Care,” 2018, p. 125)

Decreasing nonproductive and overtime hours in the organization can help the organization meet its financial goals.

In conclusion, nurse leader must collaboratively work with members of the healthcare team to reduce cost and provide

quality care to patients. “Those charged with clinical outcome accountability and those shepherding the system’s financial

resources must have aligned incentives in order for the system to work well.”(BRIGHT & Beyt, n.d.) System thinking within the

organization improve outcomes for patients.
